We are proud of the clean and tidy belfry at St Peter's, Tankersley. The bells here were cast 1560, 1628 and 1729. The wooden frame dates from the early 1800's. The large wheels and iron bell straps would have been made locally. Everything is at least 200 years old and hasn't been modernised.
We like to call Tankersley bells a 'quirky heritage ring'.

Its lighter nights now and its a bit warmer. Maybe you are wondering what to do on an evening. How about learning to ring church bells? If not send it on to someone you know who might.
In our United Benefice we have a three bell tower at St Peter's Tankersley and an Eight bell tower at St Leonard's Wortley.
The same team of ringers keep the bells ringing in both churches.
This is a Discover Bellringing video produced by the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers.

We were pleased to welcome a team of visiting ringers to St Peter’s this evening.
Our bells were rung full circle between 5.30pm and 6pm. Did you hear them ringing out in the darkness.
Having visiting teams is something bell ringing teams do, and we in turn go ringing at other churches.

A Date for your Diary - Pancake Day
Come along to St Peter's on Pancake Day Shrove Tuesday 17th February and have a go at ringing The Pancake Bell.
Open to everyone to have a go under the supervision of our bell ringers. There will be freshly cooked pancakes and refreshments to make your visit even better. It is in half-term so bring the family with you.
You can find out more about bell ringing while you are there.
The Pancake Bell is an old traditional in churches. A tower bell was rung on Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) at 11 AM to call people to confession ("shrive") before Lent, also signalling them to use up rich foods like eggs and fats by making pancakes, with traditions including pancake races.
Tankersley church did carry out this bell ringing tradition in the past and the church members and the bell ringers have revived it in recent years.

The bell ringers at St Peter's would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

The bells were ringing this evening for the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. The ringing was part of a national event where church bells all over the UK rang at the same time to mark the event.
Ringers from Tankersley and Wortley took part.
