John 12:1–8

Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.

Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”

He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.

Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

John 13:1–17
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper.

He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”

Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”

Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”

Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”

Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.”

For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them,

“Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

John 13:21-32

After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in the spirit and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you that one of you will hand me over.”

The disciples were looking at one another, being perplexed about whom he was speaking.

There was reclining in the bosom of Jesus one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

Therefore Simon Peter nods to this one and says to him, “Say who it is about whom he is speaking.”

Having leaned back thus upon the breast of Jesus, that one says to him, “Lord, who is it?”

Jesus answers, “It is that one to whom I, having dipped the morsel, will give it.” Having dipped the morsel, he takes and gives it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

And after the morsel, then Satan entered into him. Therefore Jesus says to him, “What you are doing, do quickly.”

But no one of those reclining at table knew for what purpose he said this to him.

For some were thinking, since Judas had the moneybag, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

Therefore, having received the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.

When therefore he had gone out, Jesus says, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him immediately.”

Holy Monday: Jesus cleanses the temple 🪙

John 2:13-16
And the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting there. And having made a scourge of small cords, He drove out all from the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money-changers, and overthrew the tables. And He said to those selling the doves, “Take these things hence; make not My Father’s house a house of merchandise.”

Isaiah 56:7
I will bring them to my holy mountain, and gladden them in my house of prayer: their whole-burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be acceptable upon mine altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.

Mark 11:15-17
And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.
And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. And he was teaching and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

Jeremiah 7:11
Is my house, whereon my name is called, a den of robbers in your eyes? And, behold, I have seen it, saith the Lord.

John 15:5
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without Me you can do nothing.”

Zechariah 9:9

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Sion; proclaim it aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, the King is coming to thee, just, and a Saviour; he is meek and riding on an ass, and a young foal”

The Triumphal Entry (Matthew 21:1-11)

“Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a c**t with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

‘Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
on a c**t, the foal of a beast of burden.’

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the c**t and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up…”

“The Procession in the Streets of Jerusalem” artist: James Tissot

James Jacques Tissot (1836–1902) was a French painter and illustrator known initially for his elegant depictions of contemporary high society in Paris and London during the Victorian and Belle Époque eras. After experiencing a profound vision around 1885 while visiting the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, he returned to his Catholic faith and shifted his focus entirely to biblical subjects.

To achieve historical and cultural accuracy, he made three extended trips to the Holy Land (in 1886, 1889, and 1896), where he sketched landscapes, architecture, costumes, and daily life.

“Today is the feast of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, 'Lady Day'. In England it was once the spring quarter-day, when contracts would begin and servants took new jobs, and until 1752 it was also the start of the New Year. A day for new beginnings, new life of many kinds.

For the medieval church, March 25 was the most important date in history: it was both the beginning and the end of Christ's life on earth, the date of his conception at the Annunciation and his death on Good Friday.

To underline the harmony and purpose which, in the eyes of medieval Christians, shaped the divinely-written narrative of the history of the world, 25 March was also said to be the date of other significant events: the eighth day of Creation, the crossing of the Red Sea, the sacrifice of Isaac, and other days linked with or prefiguring the story of the world's fall and redemption. The date occurs at a conjunction of solar, lunar, and natural cycles: all these events were understood to have happened in the spring, when life returns to the earth, and at the vernal equinox, once the days begin to grow longer than the nights and light triumphs over the power of darkness.

The resonances of 25 March reached even unto Middle Earth, as Tolkien aligned the downfall of the Ring to this most auspicious of dates.

'Lady Day in Lent' is the springtime feast of the Virgin Mary, one of several 'lady days' which marked the seasons of the medieval year.”
