A. W. Pink: "The sun shining into a neglected room, does not create the dust and cobwebs, but simply reveals them. Thus it is with the Christian. The more the light of the Spirit is turned upon him inwardly, the more he discovers the horrible plague of his heart (I Kings 8:38), and the more he realizes what a wretched failure he is! The fact is, dear discouraged soul, that the more you are growing out of love with yourself, the more you are being saved from the power of sin. Wherein lies its fearful potency? Why, in its power to deceive us. It lies to us. It did so to Adam and Eve. It gives us false estimates of values so that we mistake the tinsel for real gold. To be saved from the power of sin is to have our eyes opened so that we see things in God’s light—it is to know the truth about things all around us, and the truth about ourselves. But further—sin not only deceives, it puffs up, causing its infatuated victims to think highly of themselves. Sin ever produces self-love and self-righteousness. But when God takes us in hand, it is the very opposite—the workings of the Spirit subdue our pride. How? By giving increasing discoveries of SELF and of the exceeding sinfulness of SIN, so that each one cries with Job, 'Behold! I am vile!' (40:4). Such a one is being saved from the power of sin—its power to deceive and to inflate."

Habakkuk 1:2-4
2 O Lord, how long shall I cry,
and thou wilt not hear!
even cry out unto thee of violence,
and thou wilt not save!
3 Why dost thou shew me iniquity,
and cause me to behold grievance?
for spoiling and violence are before me:
and there are that raise up strife and contention.
4 Therefore the law is slacked,
and judgment doth never go forth:
for the wicked doth compass about the righteous;
therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.

G. W. Bethune: "His griefs may be many, his temptations strong, his infirmity extreme, and therefore he cannot help being troubled; but he has comfort amidst all, because he belongs to his faithful savior Jesus Christ, whose grace is sufficient for him."

Our Only Comfort Rev. Carl Haak What is your comfort in life? In death? Comfort is something that everyone wants to have in life. To have peace of mind, to be relieved from misery, to possess contentment and inner calm—certainly everyone desires that! But comfort is something few people possess. F...

C. F. Keil: “The prophecy of Habakkuk is clothed in a dramatic form,—man questioning and complaining, God answering with threatening. It announces as nearest of all, the impending fearful judgment by the instrumentality of the Chaldeans on the theocracy because of its prevailing moral corruption (ch. 1); and next to this, in a fivefold woe, the downfall of this arrogant, violent, God-forgetting, and idolatrous offender (ch. 2); and it concludes with the answer of the believing Church to this twofold divine revelation,—that is to say, with a prophetico-lyric echo of the impressions and feelings produced in the prophet’s mind by these two divine revelations when pondered in the light of the Lord’s great doings in times past (ch. 3)” (Introduction to the Old Testament, vol. 1, p. 414).

Rev. C. Haak: “Selfishness shows itself in a total lack of concern for the lot of others. It is to be happy, as long as it is all right with me and I have everything that I need, and as long as I do not have to make too many adjustments for other people. Everyone out for himself. Listen to men and women, boys and girls, of every age as they talk today. Listen to them. What are they after? What do they covet? They covet the maximum of personal pleasure and the minimum of effort and responsibility. Have a good time, that is all that counts. The principle for life to which they are sold is SELF. But the Bible says this is idolatry. This is a denial of the living God. It is a denial (of the truth) that your life is not for yourself but is to be found bowing and serving and worshipping the only God through Jesus Christ.”
