GENERAL PRESBYTERY OF THE FREE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ULSTER
Government and Morals Committee
PRESS RELEASE
Pastor Clive Johnston
The Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster has been dismayed by the Court ruling in the case of Pastor Clive Johnston where he has been convicted of breach of a so-called abortion “safe zone”.
The text that Pastor Johnston was preaching on in Coleraine was John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” This text is the heart of the hope of the gospel. For such a message to be criminalised is a symptom of how values have been turned upside down in our country. The commission of Christ was to “go ye into all the world and preach the gospel.” We now seem to have a law that forbids people fulfilling the great commission in parts of our own country. The great commission is not an option for Christians but is at the very heart of our faith. Our faith is not something that we can keep within Church buildings or our homes. This ruling has struck at principles that Christians cannot lightly surrender. There has been a fashion in recent years to rush to bring in laws in order to “virtue signal” which have unintended consequences that strike at the heart of our freedoms. It is not a bit wonder that people from abroad are viewing the erosion of free speech in the United Kingdom with horror. We commend Pastor Johnston for his stand and assure him of our prayers.
