A powerful meditation for the moment, from the Head of the Anglesey Druid Order, Kristoffer Hughes, thank you for allowing us to share this. I hope it creates a space for peace, hope and quiet reflection.

A message from the Chief of the Order.
(12 minute read)

As the world trembles, and the hearts of many grow heavy with fear, what can the Druid offer that is more than simply lip-service? What comfort or hope can be instilled when the world feels like it is heading straight to hell in handcart? I do not say the things that follow because I believe that Druidry has a monopoly on wisdom, no single tradition can claim that. Every culture, religion and spiritual path holds its own treasure of insight. I speak from this perspective because it is my lived experience, and a way in which I can feel less helpless.

Wars are waged by the powerful, their rhetoric pounds us daily, inflammatory words that convey a carelessness and a disassociation that blast through our screens and devices. Yet the wounds of their actions are carried by the ordinary, by the land, the sea, and the sky.

I cannot silence the war drums of nations. I cannot command leaders or halt the flight of missiles. So, what can we do, when helplessness feels like the overriding response? The missiles are not falling upon our heads, at least not yet, but the wounds of war are far-reaching, they wound the soul of humanity and the earth itself.

So, what on earth can any of us do?

Permit me, if you will, to share some Druid wisdom, not as lip service, not as an attempt to pacify troubled hearts with empty words. I speak because I too feel the weight of these times. I feel the same fear, the same anxiety, the same quiet dread about what may yet come. Being a Druid does not make me immune to these feelings, but when the world feels uncertain, I turn instinctively to the things that have guided my people for generations.

In times of turmoil, I turn to the one source of strength that has never failed me, the ancient wisdom of the Oak, the wisdom of those we call the Oak-Wise. The Oak stands firm through storm and season, rooted deeply in the earth while reaching steadily toward the sky. And so, when the winds of the world grow fierce, it is to that wisdom I turn; the steady counsel of patience, resilience, and right action.

If I am honest, I am writing these words not only for you, but also for myself. They stand as a small act of remembrance in a time when it is easy to forget the quiet strength that resides within the human soul. I write them to remind myself of the spirit of humanity, of our humanity, even though it is often wounded, it has not been extinguished. Words have always been the power of the Bard and the Druid, and at times, words are all I have at my disposal. Words can shape imagination, and imagination shapes cultures, and in turn, cultures shape the future. These words are not an attempt to stop a war with an outpouring of thoughts, but rather my own attempt to steady my own spirit and protect the soul of my own community whilst the world is shaking.

So what can I do? What can we do?

Well, we can do this, we can raise the ancient pillars of the Nod Cyfrin /|\ where we stand. To have –
Love in the heart,
Knowledge in the mind,
Righteousness in the deed.

If I can strive to hold them upright in my own life, then perhaps all is not lost. If we strive to hold them upright together; the pillars will rise again. This is the quiet work of the Druid, to remember and hold onto wisdom when the world around us forgets it, to speak truth when power serves to forget it, to tend to the small piece of earth that has been placed in our care.

Seven Spirals of Wisdom in a Time of War

Symbols have a proclivity to speak to us on a subtle level and to convey wisdom, in the tradition of the Anglesey Druid Order, the symbol of the Saith, seven spirals that spin from the archetypal and ancestral forces of the universe, spin their wisdom outwards in a myriad of fashions. And so, I turned to this symbol, to seek wisdom in a time of war.

The First Spiral: Speak the Truth of War

War is often wrapped in noble words, bandied about with hints at honour, security and destiny. But its reality is simpler and harsher, for war ultimately displaces the ordinary, it shatters families and the homes of the innocent. War scars the land itself and wounds the future. War concentrates on power and profit held in the hands of the few. The first wisdom is to name the wound honestly, without dressing the violence in the robes of virtue.

A Druid does not decorate violence with noble words, instead, the Druid reminds people of the cost. And the cost is huge, to people and the environment, the crisis in Gaza produced over 32 million tonnes of Co2, the war in Ukraine has produced an estimated 230 million tonnes of Co2, the current war with its attacks on oil fields and refineries is quickly overtaking those figures. Ecosystems are destroyed, marine life affected for decades, pollution and contaminates from weapons and explosions cause untold damage. These are the truths of war rarely addressed from the platforms of power.

The Second Spiral: Do Not Let War Enter the Heart

War does not only happen on battlefields, and it is also not limited to detached computers and technologies, or to drones and aircraft that drop missiles from tens of thousands of feet, without ever having to look into the eyes of the wounded. It enters the human heart through hatred, fear, and the dehumanising of others. War depends on the othering of people. The second wisdom is to refuse that infection. We may witness war, but we must not allow it to poison our humanity. In times of war, our humanity is all that we have to cling to, and cling to it we must.

The Third Spiral: Reject the Lie of Helplessness

It is easy to feel powerless before the machinery of nations, to gasp in astonishment at the unwise words of leaders. But the world is not only shaped by presidents and generals. It is shaped by millions of daily choices. The third spiral reminds us that conscience still matters, even when power seems distant. It is true that we cannot stop missiles. But the machinery of war does not only depend on weapons; it depends on instilling fear, anxiety, division, and dehumanisation. Those things grow in ordinary lives and societies long before wars erupt, this is where spiritual traditions matter and have always mattered.

As a Druid I can remind people to not let war poison the heart, to not reduce entire peoples to enemies, and to not allow fear to turn into hatred. When hatred spreads though the ordinary, wars become much easier to justify and prolong.

The Fourth Spiral: Tend Your Square Mile

No one can hold the whole world in their hands, but each of us holds a small part of it, our families, our communities, our place on the land. The fourth wisdom is simple, care for the square mile entrusted to you, for what we nurture there matters.

The great illusion of the modern world is that only global power matters. But real human life happens locally. A Druid cannot control geopolitics, but they can influence the moral atmosphere around them. Imagine if a thousand people tend their square mile with compassion, honesty and wisdom, then the world can begin to change from the ground up. This might be slow work, but it is real work.

The Fifth Spiral: Raise the Three Pillars

When the world loses its balance, the pillars of the Nod Cyfrin /|\ remind us how to stand upright again. Love, to guide the heart. Knowledge, to illuminate the mind. Righteousness, to steady our actions. The fifth spiral of wisdom is to raise these pillars first within ourselves.
War is the collapse of the pillars. Love collapses into hatred. Knowledge collapses into propaganda. Righteousness collapses into domination. If we want the world to change, the pillars must be rebuilt, first in ourselves, then in our communities. There are three questions that we can ask ourselves, but imagine for a moment that we are able to ask these questions directly to our leaders?

The Pillar of Love: Do my actions increase compassion in the world?
The Pillar of Knowledge: Am I seeking truth, or just repeating what confirms my fears?
The Pillar of Righteousness: Am I acting with integrity, even when it is inconvenient?

These are not abstract spiritual ideas; they are daily practices that could benefit us all.

The Sixth Spiral: Honour Grief

When we see suffering in the world we cannot help but feel immense grief, but it is important to consider that grief is not weakness. It is a sign that our humanity remains intact. The sixth spiral of wisdom is to allow grief to deepen compassion, rather than letting it harden into anger or despair. One thing Druids can offer that politics cannot is space for grief. The modern world tends to rush past grief or to turn it into anger. But grief is the natural response to witnessing the suffering that abounds around us.

When people allow themselves to feel grief for the innocent people in war zones, the total devastation of forests and cities, the soldiers who will never come home, something important happens. Grief reconnects us to our humanity, and from that humanity, compassion grows. Grief is a powerful human emotion, having spaces in which to express that grief is vitally important.

The Seventh Spiral: Keep the Flame of Awen Alive

In dark times, the task of the Druid is not to control history but to protect wisdom while history unfolds. The seventh spiral asks us to keep the flame of Awen alive, in words, in actions, and in the quiet courage of everyday life. Even during war, creativity abounds, we may witness quiet acts of resilience in writing, poetry and art, on the surface they may appear futile in the grand scheme of falling missiles and destruction. But they are not futile, they are what we turn to in our greatest time of need.

The Druid holds to the power of Awen, to strive to share inspiration when disconnection and fear shout the loudest. Never forget that you are a co-creator with the universe, and the bright rays of Awen can shine even through your smallest endeavours.

I write, because I am primarily a writer, but I write because I am afraid. And in that afraid-ness words are all I have. My hope is that these words go in some way to speak to your own sense of helplessness, your anxieties, and to offer what little comfort I have at my disposal.

In the spirit of Heddwch,

In a world that is breaking, you must still create. It is an act of rebellion to still create that which you love, support those creating, and not buy into the fear and control rhetoric of those seeking to destroy how the world has changed and allowed freedoms of voice and expression.

It is more important than ever to create - to work your magic into the world.

Just putting some feelers out before it’s placed on the market but would anyone be interested interested in a chalet? It’s set in its own grounds and is light and power connected within about 1/4 of an acre of land with sea views and a garage? It can be occupied for 11 months per year? Would not be suitable for disabled access because of the rural location x photo shows the stone building that’s included with the property - would make a great wet room - if you zoom in you’ll see the steps leading up to the chalet on the rhs and the roof of the chalet can be seen amongst the trees

White Ladies: Ghost or Goddess?

The White Ladies who appear all over Britain and in many other countries are often said to be the ghosts of murdered brides, or of girls who drowned themselves for unrequited love, and it’s true that they are often associated with water in Britain. In Germany they are more likely to haunt mountainsides, even appearing by day there, according to Jacob Grimm. Despite grave clothes often being white in colour, we hear very little of male phantoms dressed in white, which should perhaps alert us to a possibility that these hauntings are not the usual run of the mill ghost stories, but something different and potentially much more interesting. When I discovered that Wales has not one but two kinds of White Lady I was even more intrigued. Could these phantoms be the fragmented remains of ancient traditions, eroded by centuries of Christian attempts at obliteration?

Imagine having no real idea what you look like! That was certainly the case for many of our ancestors. Looking into still water might help a little, provided it wasn’t too windy, but even the polished obsidian or bronze mirrors of later history would be unsatisfactory. It’s somehow surprising to realise that glass mirrors weren’t really available in Britain until the 17th century.

But there’s another dimension, perhaps related to scrying, to this peering into still water for a view, for reassurance -- or maybe there’s only mystery.....
