It was a mixture of joy in memories and sadness as friends and family attended the funeral of Simon Byworth at St Catharine's Church, Gloucester yesterday, 10th June 2026. He died 13th May.

Simon served the town of Axminster faithfully where he lived for 25 years in many charitable endeavours, not least as Church Warden at The Minster Church. Another of his charitable works was Phoenix India which provides grant aid to relieve poverty, sickness and the distress it causes and to advance education, particularly but not exclusively of children, in the city of Nagpur, India and its surrounding area.

A bench in memory of Jean his late wife and in recognition of Simon's service to Axminster was unveiled in the Minster Green in 2023 and remains well used to this day.

Simon, rest in peace and rise in glory.

Last call! Come along to the Minster Church Rooms for tea, coffee, cakes and raffle by midday today and support the town's swimming pool.

Then pop along to The Minster itself for the free lunchtime concert between 12.30-1pm.

On this cold, wet morning in Axminster, why not join us in the church rooms for a cup of tea and a slice of cake? It’s a lovely way to stay warm, catch up with friends and support our community-funded swimming pool. We look forward to seeing you there!

Pianist Joyce Clarke is performing our lunchtime concert tomorrow, and we can't wait! Joyce will be playing works by Mozart, Schubert, Chopin and Mendelssohn on our wonderful Blüthner grand piano. All welcome. 12.30pm to 1.00pm. Entry is free, with a retiring collection.
