Harvest time is always a great opportunity to pray and reflect on the significance of life. What I mean is that stuck in your car 🚗 behind a large farm vehicle 🚜 doing 3mph down a narrow lane, there’s not much else you can do! 😄. On the plus side, we do get some great local produce. 🌽

The bible frequently uses harvest as a metaphor for human development – how spiritual ‘seeds’ planted in us grow, ripen and yield ‘fruit’.

This week at St Andrew’s we look at a passage where St Paul explains some of the characteristics that naturally develop in someone who’s life is centred on God: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He called them ‘fruits of the spirit’ because he didn’t see them as self improvement goals to be worked on, but rather as qualities that flourish in people who have God in their lives.

They say parenting is the toughest job in the world 🌍. For years you work tirelessly, spend all you have, make sacrifices, get moaned at, clean up the mess, and crawl into bed exhausted 😵. Then one day it’s all worth it, as a young adult thanks you for all you’ve done and for all the patience and love you’ve lavished on them. Well, maybe… 😉.

King David certainly didn’t have much luck in that respect. His son Absalom expressed his gratitude by killing his half-brother, usurping his father’s throne and causing him to flee for his life, then helping himself to his father’s concubines. You might think David would hold a bit of a grudge. Yet as he put his thoughts down in words, it was more in sorrow than in anger. He had a lot to reflect upon.

This week at St Andrew’s we’re looking at Psalm 138 - a personal song of thanksgiving and courage in a season of trouble and hostility.

It’s hard trying to do the right thing; even harder when people are trying to undermine you, or when the whole system seems stacked against the decent, honest player 😠.

If only there were someone in charge of the universe 🌌who, in the long term, promised to defend the good guys and uphold justice 🧑‍⚖️. Oh, wait…
