Having sadly lost Selwyn Green, a long time member of our congregation, back in August last year, we have been trying to organise a service at which we could give thanks for Selwyn’s life, his diligent and faithful service to our church, and for his friendship.
Today we managed to do just that.
We were delighted and privileged that Selwyn’s widow, Nora, together with various members of Selwyn’s and her family were able to join us.
Kevin led the service and as part of it, asked the congregation to write on labels, memories of Selwyn. These were hung on a “memory tree”.

What a fun, but busy, day we had yesterday at Growing Space’s Christmas Wreath Making event.
It was well attended and there will undoubtedly be a number of newly created Christmas Wreaths adorning the front doors of Ashburton today!
The day concluded with a lunch of homemade soup followed by cake. What was there not to enjoy?😁 What’s more, £365 was raised for the Ashburton Swimming Pool Association!
Well done to all who organised and helped at this event.

Well done to the hundred or so folk who attended the Community Christmas Sing at Ashburton Arts Centre last night and braved the elements thrown at us by Storm Bram.
Organised by the members of Ashburton Methodist Church, the evening was led by our minister Kevin Hooke, who reminded us of the joyful story of Christmas for many, but also took time to remind us of those who often struggle at this time of year.
Kevin also highlighted the work at South Dartmoor Community College of “Sparkles” that helps bring a little joy to the less advantaged members of their college community, by providing Christmas Hampers.
A retiring collection raised over £370 for the work of Sparkles! A big thank you to all who contributed.
The carols were rousingly accompanied by 10 members of the local Salvation Army. Nigel from the band was able to speak a little of the valuable work that the Salvation Army does, especially around Christmas, with the homeless and other less advantaged folk.
Also a big thank you to the Arts Centre for permitting us to use their premises for the event, especially to Andy Williamson for manning the sound, light and video desk, and ensuring all ran smoothly.
“Sheep” biscuits were provided to all who attended, again as a reminder of those in need and attention. These appropriately accompanied the refreshments provided at the end of the event, by a team of Methodist folk.
Hopefully all who attended would agree that the evening’s event helped a joyful and celebratory start to Christmas.

A big thank you to Sarah Kehaya for leading this morning's Informal Worship title "Orange in the Stocking" during which we had the opportunity to sing along to this jolly song.
It's very much of an "earworm" of a tune, so I'm posting it here to continue the feeding of that worm😆

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Ashburton Meths, together with Chloe from St Andrews were out in force this evening, and in good voice, carol singing in Ashburton town centre during late night shopping.
It was great having a number of passer bys also singing along.

Well done to all who participated in and attended the Christmas Market yesterday.
It was certainly very busy and undoubtedly a great success.
The goods on display were a delight to view, not only that, but there was plenty of tea, coffee and cake, as well as pleasant conversation 😀

A great success at yesterday’s Community Feast and Apple Pressing!
The event was organised by Growing Space, which is one of a number of community events initiated by Ashburton Methodist Church.
It having been a bumper year for apples, the apple pulper, press and bottling team were very busy throughout, as were the team in the kitchen preparing and serving delicious soup and apple crumble.
A special shout out for the young folk undertaking their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Community work. Their help was invaluable.
A big thank you also to the various musicians that performed during the event and provided delightful background music.
Around £400 was raised for the Moorland Community Care charity.

Members of both Ashburton and Buckfast Methodist Church, took time out yesterday at East Shallowford Farm near Widecombe, to contemplate and prioritise aspects Worship and Discipleship.
The day was very fruitful and gave us much to both consider, action and modify.
It was great to be able to do all of this, in delightful and peaceful surroundings.

Here is a communion cloth from 1972, embroidered with the names of those who were members presumably, or possibly simply associated with Ashburton Methodist Church.
Despite the fact that Sarah and I didn’t join the church until 1984, many of the names are familiar to us. The various Tuckers, Madge and Michael Steer, Ilene Cleave, the Webbers, Ben Nightingale, the Rippings, and Gladys Widdicombe are all folk we remember, with great fondness and respect. Undoubtedly there are more that I’ve missed on visually scanning the cloth.
Clifford Bell was the minister at the time, I believe.
What a delight and a treat!
