Warmest congratulations to Malachi Cush, who received the St Patrick’s Medal in recognition of his generous service to the Archdiocese, particularly through his work in preparing for and contributing to our recent Congress on Youth, Family and Faith.

The award also recognises the service Malachi offered to the wider Church during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the continuing witness to faith that he gives through his work with charities and his work in media and broadcasting.

We also offer our sincere thanks to Fr Brian Slater and the Donaghmore parish community for the warm welcome they extended to Bishop Michael, and for their thoughtful presentation to him as he prepares to take up his new ministry as Bishop of Derry.

Bishop Michael’s Mass of Thanksgiving

A Mass of Thanksgiving will take place on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 at 7.00pm in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh. All are welcome.

This Mass will give everyone an opportunity to thank Bishop Michael for his seven years of generous service in the Archdiocese of Armagh and wish him well on his appointment as Bishop of Derry.

“If he listens to you, you have won back your brother.”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus does not pretend that life together will remain free from hurt, wrongdoing or disagreement. Yet he asks us to respond differently: speak directly rather than gossip, listen before judging, and seek reconciliation rather than victory.

The aim of a difficult conversation is not to shame another person or prove ourselves right. It is to win back a brother or sister, to restore what has been wounded and loosen the bonds of resentment.

This takes courage, humility and prayer. But Christ gives us a promise: whenever we gather honestly in his name, even in the strain of disagreement, he is there among us.

Lord, give us the courage to speak truth with love, the humility to listen, and the grace to seek one another again.

“His teaching made a deep impression on them because he spoke with authority.” Luke 4:31-37

In today’s Gospel, Jesus does more than speak about freedom. His word brings freedom.

In the synagogue at Capernaum, Christ confronts the unclean spirit that diminishes and binds the man before him. His authority does not crush the man but restores him. The unclean spirit leaves, and the man remains unharmed.

There is something in this for us too. The voice of Christ cuts through the noise, fear and confusion that can take hold of us. Jesus offers truth, mercy and love that sets each of us free.

Perhaps today we might allow his word to reach those places within us that need healing, freedom and peace.

As a new school year begins, we pray for all our young people who are returning to school.

May God be with you in every classroom, conversation and new beginning.

May He calm your worries, strengthen your confidence, deepen your friendships and help you recognise the gifts He has placed within you.

We pray too for teachers, school staff and families. May they have patience, wisdom and encouragement for the year ahead.

Lord, bless our school communities.
Keep them safe, hopeful and full of kindness.

Amen.
