“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)

In this Beatitude in the Sermon on the Mount our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is speaking about a spiritual hungering and thirsting after righteousness in people and that such people shall indeed be filled. If you are poor in spirit, if you mourn over your sin and if you have no pride in your salvation, the next step in your spiritual progress should be seeking more holiness in your life in conforming to the teaching of scripture. How often do you read and pray over the scriptures? How often do you go to church? Is holiness of life important to you? God has provided the means of grace for you to spiritually grow, but will you diligently use them?

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)

The third Beatitude given by our Lord Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is a blessing for the meek who shall inherit the earth. If you have seen your spiritual poverty in having no righteousness of your own to get into heaven and you mourn over your sin, it follows that you can have no pride in contributing anything to your own salvation. It was the Redeemer who paid the price of your sin on the cross at Calvary and it is his righteousness which is put to your account. You are saved by what Christ alone has done for lost sinners and to this you add absolutely nothing. Have you in meekness through repentance and faith received this salvation?

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)

This Beatitude given by our Saviour in the Sermon on the Mount speaks of people who mourn being comforted. It is a verse that some people associate with funerals, and whilst the sentiment may be true it is actually referring to what can be called a holy sorrow for sin. It is a reflecting upon your sin and its sad consequences in your life. Sin always separates you from God and sin is the cause of so much sorrow in the world. Mourning over your sin should lead you in repentance and faith to the Redeemer who has paid the price of sin for his people and this should give you the comfort in knowing that your sins have indeed been forgiven.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)

This is the first of what are known as the Beatitudes which are found at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount and they are a description of the different stages that can found in the lives of true believers in Christ Jesus. Blessed or spiritually happy are those people who can be described as being poor in spirit because they belong to the kingdom of heaven. The poor in spirit are those people who recognise the sin in their lives and that it deserves eternal punishment. They see that they cannot earn or deserve salvation for they do not possess their own righteousness, and so by faith they receive the righteousness of Christ. Are you poor in spirit and blessed?
