Penny's prayer for Monday September 7th.
This week is the beginning of the Global Week of Prayer Worldwide.
People may be asking what prayer is all about. I like the way Sarah at our church once described what it is not. "It is not" she said " like a slot machine where putting a coin in produces the goods. It is much more like a relationship when conversations take place, and the relationship develops."
Jesus' disciples asked him to teach them to pray and we can do the same.

Carollyn's Prayer for Sunday September 6th
There is a lot of hurt and pain in the world, in our communities and in our own lives. Jesus advised his disciples about how to approach such situations in Matthew chapter 18, and they were to become leaders of the people who wanted to follow Jesus’ teaching. The foundation of this is how we treat each other, and if we have a shared set of values

The theme for this year's Greenbelt festival was "Let it go". I must say that I didn't think that I needed to let anything go. However after a short time of relaxation and conversation with friends and family I realised that there were worries that I was hanging onto and needed to hand over to God. I don't know why I was surprised that I felt different after spending time in prayer and handing my worries over. Perhaps I should have done this earlier.

Linda's prayer for Wednesday September 2nd.
This month I am looking at psalm 121, which has very distinctive parts to it. The first two verses “I lift up my eyes to the mountains- where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth” could represent the voice of a pilgrim, someone wondering what lies ahead, what dangers they might encounter, but recognising that God is the strength they can rely on. How often to we forget to ask God for help at the outset of a new adventure, waiting until we are feeling fearful, to ask?

Penny's Prayer for Monday August 31st.
On Sunday at St Cuthbert's we celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Mother's Union. Mary Sumner, the founder lived in a very different time to our own. For a woman to found an organisation then was very rare and she didn't keep it to middle class women in a time when the church could be very conscious of social class. Although her circumstances were different to ours, she read the same Bible and followed the same Jesus as we do. As culture changes we can adapt to it but the basic principles remain the same as we follow Jesus Christ; the same Yesterday Today and for ever. This is Mary Sumner's own prayer.
