Church leaders respond to far-right appropriation of Christian symbols with ‘Outsiders welcome’ message

24/11/2025

During the first weekend of December, 5th-7th, individuals, groups and organisations are invited to join in with creating public displays of orange hearts – a symbol of compassion for people fleeing war and persecution – in thousands of different ways in local communities.

You could:
• Order free posters for your church and church members to display
• Pray for the campaign in your service on 7 December
• Organise a community event, from carol singing to giving out orange heart biscuits
• Meet your MP to show your support for refugee families to be able to reunite

To learn more about the things you can do, see https://jpit.uk/issues/asylum-and-migration/stand-with-refugees

A prayer for peacemakers

History can inspire or trap.
Walls can protect or divide.
Words can encourage or inflame.
Power can free or destroy.
Touch can comfort or violate.
Peace can be shared or withheld.
Gracious God, on this day,
when we remember past and present conflicts,
we pray for the divided peoples of the world,
that leaders, governments and each one of us
may use our resources,
our opportunities and our lives
in the service of reconciliation,
for the sake of future generations
and to the glory of your name.
Amen.

The Revd Stuart P Turner, a URC minister who has served as a British Army Chaplain since 2009, will be deployed overseas for Remembrance. In a reflection, Stuart gives thanks for those who have served with courage and selflessness — from Britain and the Commonwealth, past and present — while also lamenting the human cost of war and sharing the hope we find in Jesus.
