St Mungo's Parish Church Alloa

St Mungo's Parish Church Alloa Church of Scotland St. Mungo’s was historically the Parish Church of Alloa but is now one of two Church of Scotland Churches serving Alloa.

The present Church has been on this site for nearly 200 years, work being completed in 1819. The Church, the largest in Alloa, is one of the most important landmarks in the town and can accommodate most large and civic occasions. The Church’s Steeple towers above most buildings and can be seen from miles around. The interior, which can seat 700, has been frequently re-modelled over the years and c

urrently there are discussions underway on further alterations to the sanctuary to help meet modern day requirements.

At the centre of the world is God, in whom all our desires and longings find their meeting place. As we move closer to God, so we draw closer to one another. The hymn 'O for a thousand tongues to sing' was written by Charles Wesley in 1749. The hymn originally had 19 verses but has been trimmed down over the years. In CH4 (hymn 352) there are only 6 verses. For many years Charles tried to find peace with God but never seemed to succeed. However when he was feeling very low he opened his bible to Psalm 40:3 'He hath put a new song in my mouth....Many will see and fear and will trust in the Lord." He recorded in his journal that he felt the Spirit of God slowly chasing away the darkness of his unbelief, leaving him at peace. He described this experience as an assurance of salvation by grace through faith. His feelings are expressed in the beautiful hymn he wrote.
