After First Saturday Mass this month, families in our parish will have the opportunity to welcome the Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady into their homes for prayer.

This simple devotion invites Mary to lead us closer to her Son and encourages us to enthrone the Sacred Heart of Jesus in our homes.

The statue begins its journey from the Church after Mass and is returned the following Sunday.

If you would like to take part, please add your name to the rota on the table at the back of the church.

Let Our Lady bring your home closer to Christ. ❤️

In his Lent 2026 message, Pope Leo XIV emphasised the importance of listening—both to God and to others. He presented fasting not merely as a ritual obligation, but as a means of genuine spiritual renewal. He also called us to abstain from hurtful language, reminding us that our words shape the moral and spiritual texture of our communities, and that kindness and respect must mark Christian speech.

He urged Catholics to re-centre their lives on God during this liturgical season, and to allow that re-centring to overflow into concrete action—especially in responding to the needs of the marginalised and those who suffer.

Lent begins on 18th February — and it’s closer than we think.

Before Ash Wednesday arrives, it’s worth asking:

How might I make the most of Lent this year?

Lent isn’t about guilt or trying harder. It’s about creating space for God — through prayer, fasting, and generosity — so that Easter can truly change us.

Today, the Church celebrates St. Thomas Aquinas. He was an Italian priest who lived about 800 years ago and became one of the Church’s greatest teachers. He loved asking big questions about God and faith, and he wrote a famous book, the Summa Theologiae, to help people think clearly and honestly about what Christians believe.

If you’re curious to learn more, there’s a visually stunning and really inspiring video about St. Thomas by Bishop Robert Barron—well worth watching.

A Prayer of St Thomas

Grant me, O Lord my God,
a mind to know you,
a heart to seek you,
wisdom to find you,
conduct pleasing to you,
faithful perseverance in waiting for you,
and a hope of finally embracing you.

Amen.

In his homily this weekend, Fr. Rob invited us to reflect on whether we know why we can be confident in how the Bible was formed. In particular, he noted that the official canon—the finalised list of books—was only formally recognised in the fourth century, more than 300 years after Jesus, and that we do not possess any of the original biblical manuscripts. He also encouraged us to make use of the many helpful resources available—especially on YouTube—that explore these questions and more.

These are not questions to fear, but invitations to grow in understanding. Taking time to engage them helps us trust Scripture more deeply, and equips us to share our faith with humility, clarity, and confidence.

Welcome Home

If you’re here because you feel something stirring inside you, even just a little, you are very welcome.

Many people are coming back to church not because life feels settled, but because it doesn’t.

The noise, fast pace, and uncertainty of the world can leave us feeling restless, tired, and quietly searching for something more solid.

You don’t need to have everything worked out to come to Mass.

You don’t need to remember the words, know when to sit or stand, or be certain about what you believe.

You can simply come, sit, and let the prayers carry you.

Our parish is an ordinary Catholic church, doing ordinary faithful things:

The Mass is celebrated reverently, Scripture is proclaimed, silence is kept, and prayer is offered for the world and for you.

Some who come are returning after years away.

Some are exploring Catholicism for the first time.

Some come just to sit in God’s presence and see what happens.

However you arrive, there is space for you here.

If now feels like the right moment to take a small step, you will be met with a warm welcome, not pressure.

The door is open.

This weekend, on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we had the great joy of celebrating the Confirmation, full reception into the Catholic Church, and First Holy Communion of Jason.

As the Church marked the moment when Christ was revealed, anointed by the Spirit, and sent into his public mission, Jason was sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation and fully received into communion with the Catholic Church, completing his initiation into the sacramental life of the Church.

Members of the faithful from St Mary’s, within the Parish of St Joseph and St Mary, were present to witness, pray, and rejoice with him — a reminder that reception into the Church is always an ecclesial act, shared by the whole Body of Christ.

If you are exploring the Catholic faith, asking questions, or sensing a desire to journey deeper, we would be delighted to walk with you as you discern your next steps. You are very welcome to begin that journey with us.

Merry Christmas. And may the joy of the Nativity fill your heart during this Octave!
