Martin and several Duke of Edinbutgh students, have refreshed the round flower bed in the memorial garden, to show case the lovely sundial, given to our garden , by our parishioners John Howarth.
Thank you to Martin and volunteers who help our in our church grounds.

THE INK WELL
Part 2. Reverend Barter Alexander Duke wife Mildred Florence (nee Embling) and the reason why they came with the Inkwell from Maidenhead to Handforth to retire and the Inkwell came to be left at St Philip and St James Church Alderley.
Mildred had 2 siblings her Brother The Right Rev Hugh John Embling O.B.E M.A Baptised 10 Feb 1886 studying at Christian School, 40 Tabard St London and was working in Southwark and Westminster. From 1926 - 30 he was assistant Bishop in Korea. He travelled to Canada in 1945 to live in New Denver, British Columbia and died on the 1 June 1968 there.
Their Sister Winifred Saxty Embling 1883 - 1963 buried at Alderley Cemetery with her husband and son. She was married to Ministry Pharmaceutical Chemist, Manchester Director Edmund Watson Sleath. After Edmund's death in 1938 Winifred and Son John Edmund Sleath moved to Woodbrook Trafford Rd. Alderley Edge renaming the House HAWKSWELL. After Mildred, Hugh and Winifred family home in Iffley Oxford.
Their parents were John Edward Embling born 1855 Oxford died in Llandudno in 1924. Who with his father James were Tailors & Robe makers to the colleges and clergy of Oxford.
Their mother was Kate Weaving 1860 - 1938 with Katie's parents being John W Weaving coal merchant. Aged 20 was convicted of 'Breaking' and spent 14 days on Oxford Gaols. His wife Mary (nee Walker). Owned the The Eagle Steam Brewery Mary Weaving & Sons. Employing 17 people and occupying 15 acres.

Part 1. When an Inkwell is found at St Philip and St James Church Alderley and given to the Alderley History Group. I had to do my magic with help from Stewart Dyer and Denise Psaila to find why an Inkwell given to Rev. B.A Duke from St Lukes Church Choir dated Dec 1915 was found in the Parish rooms by Rev. Robin Pye.
Rev. BARTER ALEXANDER DUKE Born 1876 to Band Sgt Richard John Duke and Mary (nee Cole). Married twice Edith Helen Goodman 1879-1919 married 1904 St Margaret's Essex. They had a son Charles Alexander George Duke 1906- 1954. 6 yrs after Edith's death the Reverend Barter married Mildred Florence Embling 15 April 1925 in Iffley Oxford.
Barter had 10 siblings including Staff Sgt William Marmaduke (Marmaduke was their Grandfather's name) and Richard Trafalgar Duke. Lots of the family were connected to various Military regiments.
Rev Barter was a Clergyman in Cookham, West Bourne, Didcot Then retired in 1944 and came to live at 20 Grangeway. Handforth and Preached at St Philip and St James Alderley and St. Bartholomews. Wilmslow. The Reverend Barter Alexander Duke was finally in 1958 was laid to rest at St Mary's Nether Alderley.

The Mothers Union Lenten project this year has been to support a small charity called Early Essentials. This is based in Wythenshawe, with branches in Peterborough,Wigan,Ballymoney and Warrington. The charity works with midwives, health and social care professionals and other agencies, to deliever newborn starter packs for vulnerable mums and babies.
They met Sarah at the collection point today, who was very pleased, with various items collected from our church,and passed on her thanks to everyone. To find out more earlyessentials.org.uk
