"Your name is oil poured out…" (Song of Solomon 1:3)

We weren’t quite sure how to approach the Song of Solomon with children—it’s a book that can feel tricky at first! But we also believe that our children need the whole counsel of God, and that includes this joyful, poetic book that speaks of the love between Christ and his church.

At Craft Club this week, we explored the beautiful fragrances mentioned in the Song of Songs—spices, fruits, oils, perfumes—and how they help us understand the joy the Lord Jesus finds in his people. Just as the bride is described as a “garden locked… with choice fruits, henna with nard, saffron, calamus and cinnamon, frankincense… and all choice spices” (4:12–14), so the people of God are a sweet-smelling offering to him.

The children made their own perfumed mixtures in response—joyful, creative reminders that when we belong to the Lord Jesus, our lives become a fragrance pleasing to him.

“What is that coming up from the wilderness like columns of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense…” (3:6)
“Your shoots are an orchard of pomegranates…” (4:13)
“Your anointing oils are fragrant…” (1:3)

The Lord Jesus loves his church!

All are welcome to this special Good News Service where we'll especially be concentrating on the love of God. We will be singing hymns about the love of God, praying, and reading the Bible with God's love in mind, and listening to a sermon all about the love of God. The service will take place at Alfred Place Baptist Church, Aberystwyth, 5pm on Sunday the 16th of February 2025.

A bumper Craft Club Christmas special today looking at the Lord Jesus, light of the world… making lanterns for use in our Incarnation Celebration next Saturday.

A reminder that tomorrow's whole-church Prayer-Meeting (5th of November, 2024) will be at the earlier time of 5:45pm, preceded by a bring-your-own-picnic downstairs in AP @ 5pm. Some are paying to watch fireworks afterwards, some are going to find higher ground to watch for free, others are having an early-night! :-)

Yesterday was the Lord’s Day, we started with Craft Club in the morning looking at Ecclesiastes; then ended the day with Students @ The Manse looking at 2 Samuel.

This month in AP we're looking at the book of Ruth. Last Lord's Day we had a wheat-filled Craft Club, and this morning the men will show that Ruth is not just a book for women, as we look for Christ together around some breakfast.
