Today we pray that we will not stop looking for new opportunities to share the good news about Jesus. Much ingenuity and resilience has been shown over 150 years in Wales.
Ferndale Corp started by holding meetings on the mountainside in the 1880s.
One of the problems faced by the church in Abertillery in its early years at the same time was a lack of barracks. War Cry reported in 1884 that the Salvationists said ‘We met under our Father’s roof, although snow fell, we had a great muster.’

Today we praise the influence of brass bands from the early days of The Salvation Army right through to today and those who compose music that raises our spirits and challenges our souls.
The music has always been there. In 1878, four years after The Salvation Army started in Wales, War Cry reported: “A grand demonstration was led by the Ebbw Vale Brass Band, who could play anything, any amount of times without stopping.”
In its early years, Salvation Army bands played an important role in the open-air ministry so essential to the growth of the Movement.

The first meeting in Wrexham took place on October 23rd, 1881. A group of Wrexham soldiers became known as ‘The Praying Boys’ because of their enthusiastic prayers.
Today we hope the enthusiasm of ‘The Praying Boys’ will continue to mark the prayers of Wrexham Church seeing it move from strength to strength.

Today pray for the corps and their community as they explore their future in Pentre.
In 1879, Captain Louisa Lock and three members of her church were arrested for ‘obstructing a thoroughfare in the town while preaching and were locked up at the police station.'
The Christian Mission Magazine at the time says, 'A crier, who was a member of the Salvation Army – and who is possessed of but one arm and one leg – went about immediately, and announced that the members of the Salvation Army were being taken to prison and besought all who could make it to accompany them when they were taken to the railway station en route for Pontypridd, and then to Cardiff Gaol.”
Around 5,000 people turned up on the streets along the route singing their support for the officers.

Pray for the corps and community of Aberdare and for all who attend the drop ins, foodbanks and Church. In 1878, Mrs Pamela Shepherd and her four daughters left the London Whitechapel Headquarters of The Salvation Army, to take charge in Aberdare in a move described as “most important incident in the history of The Salvation Army before 1880”. One month into the role and it was reported that “some of the most besotted drunkards in the town had been converted." The fame of the Aberdare meetings brought men from the Rhondda Valley, who begged that at least one of
the girls might hold meetings outside Aberdare.
