Today, we entered the Season of Creation. Thank you to Reverend Nina for helping us understand that we have a responsibility in caring for our world. The Season of Creation lasts for another three weeks. In each of these three weeks we have a different preacher no doubt with their own slant on what God requires of us in our stewardship of the planet. It was good to welcome newcomers and visitors to our worship. We look forward to welcoming them back.

Thanks to all who supported Doors Open Day in St John’s today. We welcomed almost 120 visitors including some children. Special thanks to our splendid team of volunteers who were supportive, friendly and informative🙏

The September photo in our 175th Anniversary Calendar is of the wonderful arch mural depicting the Ascension of our Lord. Tracing the artist was a challenge but it was discovered quite recently that the mural was painted by James Alexander Hay Hector (1868-1940) in the early part of the 20th Century. Hay was Assistant Master of Gray's School of Art. He used a continental style of painting linked to Impressionism and Realism. The arch is especially impressive when viewed in the afternoon if the sun is shining through the West window but is otherwise well illuminated by enhanced interior lighting installed in 2022. Visitors can view the arch along with other architectural aspects of the church during Doors Open Day, Saturday 5th September.

Doors Open Day 2026 will take place on 5th and 6th September in Aberdeen. As Scotland’s largest free festival celebrating places and stories, both old and new, it offers a unique opportunity to discover more about the city’s architecture and explore buildings and spaces that are not normally open to the public.

St John’s is participating once again. We look forward to receiving visitors on Saturday 5th September between 10.00 and 16.00. Thanks to our volunteers in making it happen.

Today, St John’s gave thanks for the three and a half year ministry given so generously and graciously by Reverend Roger Dyer. Roger will be greatly missed by the St John’s community but leaves us with a stronger faith and many happy memories. God bless you, Roger, in your future ministry.
