Proudly located in Lerwick since the 1860’s, St Magnus Scottish Episcopal Church has welcomed generations of worshipers through its doors over its 160+ year history. Last year, St Magnus and its congregation celebrated the Ordination to the Order of Priests of Rev Helen Randall with a special service, ordained by our Bishop, Rt Rev Anne Dyer.

After working with children and young people as a class teacher, mentor, and manager within the English primary education system, Helen moved to Shetland in 2018. Quickly becoming an integral part of the Diocese community, Helen undertook three years of training at the Scottish Episcopal Institute to become a Deacon.

Now, Helen is looking forward to strengthening her connection with her local community. Hear more about Helen’s background and journey on our website: https://aoepiscopal.scot/celebrating-new-milestones-in-conversation-with-rev-helen-randall/

For the Bishop’s Lent Appeal 2026, we are focusing on Christian Aid Climate Justice Projects.

Working with crisis-affected communities, Christian Aid helps the most marginalised to adapt, build resilience, and reduce their vulnerability. Focused on climate resilient agriculture, climate finance, loss and damage restoration, climate information services, and early warning systems, these projects help affected communities live with dignity, respond effectively to climate-related disasters, and build resilient livelihoods.

At its core, Christian Aid’s climate work stems from our belief that change is possible.

Beautifully situated on the Isle of Fetlar in the Shetland Islands, Fetlar Kirk is known for its peaceful simplicity and scenic views. Last week, Fetlar Kirk was selected as Church of the Week by the National Churches Trust.

Originally built in 1791, the Church has provided a safe haven for local communities for over 200 years, including those within the Scottish Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney. Alongside the Kirk is The Glebe, a retreat centre run by SEC-ordained Revd Graham Booth, and his wife, Dr Ruth Booth. Known throughout the Diocese, Revd Graham and Dr Ruth provide a safe and sacred space for all those who stay with them.

In 2021, the Kirk was bought from the Church of Scotland by a community-owned charity, Friends of Fetlar Kirk. Alongside the National Churches Trust and its Cherish programme grant for emergency repairs, Friends of Fetlar Kirk have been pivotal in ensuring the long-term future of the Church, previously at risk due to gradual deterioration. Now, through this ongoing support, Friends of Fetlar Kirk has big plans, including a new roof and accessibility improvements.

Thank you to the National Churches Trust for spotlighting this beautiful and historic church, and for the ongoing support of its restoration.

In recognition of her incredible work within the Diocese and our wider community, Revd Jennifer Holden was the ideal candidate for the role of Dean of the Diocese.

Asked by Bishop Rt Rev Anne Dyer, Jenny assumed the responsibility of Dean with pride and a commitment to serving our congregations across the city, Shire, and Islands. Experiencing church communities in Scotland, England, Africa, and America, Jenny has a diverse background within the Anglican congregation - something she holds close in her position as Dean.

In a Q&A with the Diocese, Jenny shares her earlier memories of being baptised in the United Reformed Church in Northamptonshire, through to her global travels and what brought her to us in Aberdeen. Read more: https://bit.ly/4rKcCvD

The Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney, the Cathedral Church of St Machar, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Aberdeen recently celebrated the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

In a packed service at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Aberdeen, our own Bishop Anne was joined by the Rt Rev. Hugh Gilbert OSB of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Aberdeen, and Rev. Sarah Brown of the Cathedral Church of St Machar. With each delivering sermons that focused on unification under Jesus, and this year’s theme of ‘One Body, One Spirit’.

We wish to thank all those who attended this service. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity demonstrates that even in anxious and uncertain times, we can come together and find solace in God’s love.

Get to know Revd Jennifer ‘Jenny’ Holden, our recently appointed Dean of the Diocese and the first female Dean in our 160+ year history!

As a prominent and well-respected member of the Diocese, Jenny’s appointment as Dean has been celebrated throughout the community. Upon taking up her new role, Jenny reflected on her time in the Diocese so far and the honour of becoming our Dean.

From her experiences as a layperson to her role as an Advisor to Christian Life, Jenny shared her wonderful story with us. You can read all about it on our website: https://aoepiscopal.scot/meet-our-new-dean-of-the-diocese-revd-jennifer-holden/

To celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, this Sunday, St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Aberdeen will be hosting a special joint service with St. Machar’s Cathedral, Aberdeen, and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cathedral.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an important week in our calendar, an ecumenical celebration in which we give our particular attention to the prayer of Jesus that all those who are his friends and follow him would be united, one. This year, the theme is ‘One Body, One Spirit,’ reflecting on Ephesians 4, with supporting material kindly prepared by the faithful of the Armenian Apostolic Church, along with their brothers and sisters from the Armenian Catholic and Evangelical Churches.

In our world fraught with fractures and division, we pray that the Church can be a sign of God’s love and mercy.

All are welcome to this Sunday’s service, so we hope to see you from 4.30 PM at St Mary’s.
