St Mary’s Carden Place hosted around 100 worshipers from across Aberdeen for a special service celebrating the week of prayer for Christian unity.

Rt Rev Anne Dyer, Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney, led a service uniting three Christian denominations. The event at St Mary’s featured a sermon from the Roman Catholic Bishop of Aberdeen Rt Reverend Hugh Gilbert and intercessions led by the Church of Scotland’s Revd Sarah Brown, Minister of the Cathedral Church of St Machar. A 20-strong choir from the three churches, St Mary’s Carden Place, St Mary’s Cathedral and St Machar’s joined together and led hymns.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began on Sunday, 18 January, and ran through to the following Sunday, 25 January.

Bishop Anne said: “This is an important week in our calendar, an ecumenical celebration in which we give our particular attention to the prayer of Jesus that all those who are his friends and follow him would be united, one. In our world, which is so fractured and experiencing high levels of chaos at present, we pray that the Church might be a sign of God’s love and mercy.”
