Panagioti Potagos (Lala) 🇦🇱☦️

Panagiotis Potagos (1838–1903) was a Arvanite physician, philosopher, and explorer from Vytina, in the Peloponnese.

He became known for his extraordinary journeys through Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, China, and Africa, often travelling alone and under extremely difficult conditions.

A passionate scholar, Potagos compared his observations with the writings of ancient authors such as Homer, Herodotus, Ptolemy, and Strabo. His writings also reflected his particular view of the ancient past: he identified the Albanians with the descendants of the Pelasgians and described himself as a “Pelasgo-Albanian” (Πελασγο-Αλβανός).

For Potagos, the ancient history of the Balkans was deeply connected to the peoples who inhabited them, and he sought to explore these connections through ethnology, language, geography, and historical tradition. His life combined scientific curiosity, exploration, and a strong interest in the origins of the peoples of the region.

The Gheg Warriors of Scanderbeg 🇦🇱✝️

In the fifteenth century, Skanderbeg's resistance drew heavily upon the mountain communities of northern and central Albania. These men were not a uniform professional army, but experienced highland fighters—many of them shepherds and farmers accustomed to the difficult terrain of the Balkans.

Historian Oliver Jens Schmitt emphasizes their resilience, mobility and intimate knowledge of the mountains. Lightly equipped, they were poorly suited to conventional battles against Ottoman heavy cavalry and Janissaries, but became formidable in narrow gorges, forests and mountain passes, where ambushes, sudden attacks and rapid retreats could turn the terrain itself into a weapon.

Skanderbeg's core supporters were often only two or three thousand men, yet many were experienced veterans who had previously served in Ottoman armies. Their effectiveness came not simply from numbers or equipment, but from experience, mobility, endurance and mastery of the highlands.
Thus, while calling them a single “Gheg elite army” would be too simplistic historically, the Gheg and other northern highland warriors formed an important part of the martial world from which Skanderbeg drew his strength—a force that Ottoman soldiers learned to fear in the forests and mountains of Albania.

Kolë Mark Kola 🇦🇱✝️

Kolë Mark Kola was a well-known traditional figure from Shalë in the Dukagjin region of northern Albania, originating from Lotaj.

He is remembered in local tradition as a Albanian Catholic leader and patriot, particularly for his opposition to attempts to spread Islam in the Shalë area during the Ottoman period.

According to local oral tradition, Ali Dushani, a representative of the Begollaj family from Peja, came to Shalë to collect taxes and impose the construction of mosques. Kolë Mark Kola opposed him and, according to the tradition, killed Ali Dushani.

Because of this, Kolë Mark Kola became a symbol in the traditional memory of Dukagjin of the defense of Christianity, honor, and the identity of the region. Some local sources refer to him by the epithet “Guardian of Christ.”

Pjetër Perlati 🇦🇱✝️ was a prominent Albanian nobleman, cleric, diplomat, and military commander of the 15th century. He originated from Perlat in the region of Mirditë, in northern Albania, and was associated with the Dukagjini princely lineage, one of the great aristocratic houses of medieval Albania.

A close ally of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Perlati combined religious authority with military leadership and diplomacy. He is particularly remembered for commanding the defense of Sfetigrad in 1448, during the Ottoman campaigns against Skanderbeg’s forces. His life represents the close relationship between Albania’s noble families, the Catholic Church, and the resistance against Ottoman expansion.
