Joy That Trouble Can’t Touch
Life is hard. Some days the money runs out before the month does. Some nights the pain in your body keeps you awake, or the pain in your heart keeps you crying. Maybe you’ve lost your job, your health, or your direction, and tomorrow feels like a question mark you’re too tired to answer. It’s okay to admit you’re weary. It’s okay to feel broken.
But listen, child of God: you were not made to live in the shadow of sorrow.
Look at the flowers. They don’t panic when the clouds roll in. They don’t complain when the sun hides for a while. They just keep their faces turned upward, waiting, and they still bloom. You can too. Your joy does not depend on your paycheck, your doctor’s report, or people’s opinions. Real joy depends on One who never changes: Jesus Christ.
Even if everything else is taken from you, there is one thing trouble can never steal the truth that you are loved by God. If you have no job, you still have a Father. If your body is weak, His strength is still holding you. If you feel lost today, the Shepherd is already looking for you.
So choose to be positive. Not by pretending life is easy, but by believing, even through tears, that morning is still coming. Smile, not because your problems are small, but because your God is bigger than every single one of them.
The enemy wants you to think that hardship means God has forgotten you. But the opposite is true hardship is often where God holds you closest. When you’re weak, He is strong for you. When you’re empty, He fills you. When you have nothing left, you discover He is enough.
That’s why you can be cheerful even now. That’s why you can have peace when nothing makes sense. That’s why you can sing in the valley, because you know the One who walks with you is leading you home.
From Steps to Christ, Chapter 13
“Rejoicing in the Lord,” we’re reminded:
“We should be the most cheerful people on the earth, and our faces should express the peace and joy that dwell in heaven.” Steps to Christ, p. 120
God isn’t asking you to fake a smile. He’s inviting you to receive a joy that no sickness, no poverty, no fear, and no failure can take away. A joy that lives in you because Christ lives in you.
So today, lift your head. Count three things you can thank God for even if they’re small. A breath. A sunrise. A verse. A friend. Gratitude is where joy begins. And with Jesus, your story isn’t over. The best part is still coming.
