Joy That Stays
A joyful life isn’t a life without storms. It’s a life with an Anchor. And that Anchor is God faithful to every promise He has ever spoken.
Numbers 23:19 reminds us, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” What He promises, He performs. That’s where real joy begins not in perfect circumstances, but in a perfect God.
Because He is faithful, we can keep going. Not crawling, not dragging our feet in defeat, but walking with peace in our hearts. John 14:27 gives us Jesus’ own words: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” The world gives peace only when everything is calm. Jesus gives peace in the storm. That’s why Paul could write from a prison cell, Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.” Joy isn’t denial. It’s defiance in the face of despair, because we know Who holds tomorrow.
And with that joy comes strength. Not the kind we manufacture, but the kind we receive. Nehemiah 8:10 declares, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” When the world drains you, His joy fills you back up. When your knees shake, Isaiah 41:10 steadies you: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” You are upheld. You are helped. You are not standing on your own.
That’s the secret to courage that lasts His presence. Psalm 16:11 says, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Fullness of joy isn’t found in a vacation, a paycheck, or a problem-free day. It’s found in His presence. And the promise is staggering: Matthew 28:20, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Always. Not sometimes. Not when you’re strong. Not when you’re good. Always.
So thank God today not just for what He’s done, but for Who He is. Faithful. Present. Unchanging. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 sums it up: “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” A joyful life is a thankful life, rooted in the certainty that God keeps His word.
Psalm 23:4 becomes your song: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.” You can walk, not run away. You can have peace, not panic. You can have courage, not collapse. Because He is with you.
Ellen G. White said it beautifully: “The path where God leads the way may lie through the desert or the sea, but it is a safe path.” Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 290. Safe, because He walks it with you.
So lift your head. Breathe in His peace. Stand in His strength. Laugh again with the courage that comes from knowing the God of the universe is faithful, and He calls you His own. Romans 15:13 is your benediction: “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
This is the joyful life not without trouble, but never without Him. And because He is with you, you can keep going with peace, with strength, with courage, and with a joy that stays.
