Learning from the Field: The Importance of Mulching for Climate-Smart Agriculture ‼️

At a Conservation Agriculture demonstration site in a school compound in Hamassa Kebele, Mirab Abaya Woreda, Gamo Zone, South Ethiopia Region, Mr. Wendimagegn Adinew, Project Officer of the I-CARE – Innovation-driven Climate-Smart Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security and Climate Resilience Project, implemented by SCORE Arbaminch Area Office, explains to the Catholic Caritas Ethiopia – Meki team the importance of mulching in sustainable and climate-smart farming.

Mulching is an important Conservation Agriculture practice that involves covering the soil with crop residues or other suitable organic materials. It helps protect the soil surface from erosion, reduce moisture loss through evaporation, suppress weeds, improve soil structure and fertility, and gradually increase soil organic matter. By keeping the soil covered, mulching also helps regulate soil temperature and creates a more favorable environment for soil organisms and plant growth.

In areas increasingly affected by rainfall variability and land degradation, practices such as mulching can play a vital role in improving soil moisture retention, strengthening climate resilience, and supporting sustainable food production.

The demonstration site provides a practical learning space where farmers, students, project teams, and other stakeholders can observe and exchange knowledge on Conservation Agriculture practices and their contribution to resilient agricultural systems.

From demonstration to learning, and from learning to action; promoting practical solutions for climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture.

SCORE Hamer Area Office | Women's Resilence Building (WoRB) Project Update ‼️

September 2, 2026

In response to the impacts of a recurring drought and climate-related livelihood challenges, the Women’s Resilience Building (WoRB) Project implemeted by SCORE in BennaTsemay Woreda of the South Omo Zone has been supporting women in the area to strengthen their livelihoods and build resilience.

Through the project, 45 women from Enchete, Duma, and Gisma kebeles received vegetable production training, quality onion seeds, pest-control inputs, and continuous technical support for vegetable production.

The results are remarkable:- each woman harvested an average of 6.47 quintals of onions, generating an average income of 39,622 ETB per beneficiary and a total collective income of 1,784,800 ETB.

Beyond the income, the intervention is helping women improve household wellbeing and food security, invest in agricultural activities, diversify livelihoods, and strengthen their economic independence and resilience to future drought and other shocks.

This achievement demonstrates the power of investing in women-led, climate-resilient livelihoods to create lasting change for households and communities.

SCORE sincerely appreciates Misean Cara for its valuable support in making these positive changes possible.

Learning Across Communities: Sharing Experiences on Conservation Agriculture and Indigenous Knowledge ‼️

As part of the learning and experience-sharing visit to SCORE project intervention areas, we were pleased to welcome Teshome Tesfaye, Senior Program Manager representing Catholic Caritas Ethiopia – Meki Office, who led two teams to observe SCORE’s work in Sustainable Land Management, Conservation Agriculture, and Indigenous Knowledge.

During the visit, the team explored practices in areas around Derashe, Konso, and Mirab Abaya, gaining valuable insights into locally adapted approaches to sustainable agriculture and natural resource management.

The video is in Amharic. An English translation of Mr. Teshome’s remarks is provided below:-

English Translation:-

“My name is Teshome Tesfaye, and I am representing the Catholic Caritas Ethiopia – Meki Office, where I serve as a Senior Program Manager.

I arrived here leading two teams to observe the work accomplished in the SCORE project areas, particularly regarding Sustainable Land Management, Conservation Agriculture, and Indigenous Knowledge.

We visited sites around Derashe, as well as the Konso area. Even today, the conservation agriculture practices we observed around Mirab Abaya provided us with valuable insights.

We noted that their approach, especially regarding conservation agriculture, fully aligns with all three core principles of Conservation Agriculture.

Moving forward, we intend to adapt these practices to fit our specific agro-ecological context and implement them in our programs.

This is commendable work; please keep it up. We are deeply grateful for the time and experience we shared with you.”

Indigenous Knowledge Meets Scientific Agricultural Practice: Lessons from Konso ‼️

In this video, Assitant Professor Tuma Ayele, Soil Fertility Researcher and Director of the Arbaminch Agricultural Research Center, shares valuable reflections from the Konso area on the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge with scientific agricultural practices.

The video is in Amharic. An English translation of the speaker’s remarks is provided below for our English-speaking audience.

English Translation:-

“Thank you. My name is Tuma Ayele. I serve as a soil fertility researcher and the Director of the Arbaminch Agricultural Research Center.

We are here today in the Konso area to observe and assess the relationship between scientific, package-based agricultural practices and traditional local knowledge.

Konso, as you know, is home to a world-renowned cultural terracing landscape recognized by UNESCO. We have been examining this longstanding terracing system; a practice deeply ingrained in the daily lives of the local community.

This is not a newly acquired skill; it is an ancestral practice handed down through generations. It was born out of necessity and resilience. Because Konso features rugged, mountainous terrain, severe flooding and rapid soil loss posed constant threats. In response to these challenges, the community developed and mastered stone terracing on its own.

This indigenous expertise holds important lessons that can be adapted and scaled to other regions.

Terracing provides vital environmental and agricultural benefits. It conserves moisture, anchors topsoil, reduces flash flooding, and prevents soil erosion and land degradation. As you can see around us, the land remains remarkably well-preserved through sustainable stewardship.

The main challenge observed this season is a yield deficit caused by drought, particularly recurring El Niño-related climate effects in the area. Apart from such climate shocks, farmers care for their plots as attentively as their own children and consistently achieve high levels of crop productivity.

Therefore, one of the most important lessons from Konso is the community’s exceptional mastery of terracing.

Since many of you have traveled from Oromia, Meki, and other project locations, adopting and adapting this practice could be immensely beneficial. Unlike intensive mulching, stone terracing is accessible and can be constructed using locally available stones, combined with biological measures such as stabilizing vegetation. It is a practical and relatively straightforward approach to implement.

To facilitate this knowledge exchange, both our research team and experienced Konso farmers are available to share technical knowledge and practical experience. In fact, expert farmers and specialists from Konso have previously been deployed to Addis Ababa to establish urban terracing initiatives.

Similarly, farmers and experts can be supported to travel to your respective districts to provide hands-on training and assist communities in establishing these systems.

We also see promising traditional practices in the Gamo area, where farmers construct stone bunds together with biological measures. Although these practices are currently applied sporadically, they have the potential to be standardized into measurable and effective soil and water conservation systems across different locations.

For development initiatives; including Catholic development projects in Ziway and the SCORE project; designing and implementing interventions around these proven practices can contribute to transformative results. Such approaches can help build resilient landscapes and promote sustainable agriculture.

From a research perspective, our advice is clear: integrate valuable traditional practices with scientific, package-based innovations.

By building collaborative research partnerships around this synthesis of indigenous knowledge and scientific innovation, we can achieve sustainable land management, protect our soil resources, strengthen climate resilience, and secure agricultural livelihoods.

Keep up the strong work, and I encourage you all to adopt, adapt, and scale these valuable lessons from Konso.”
