Our Lifehouses are so much more than a ‘hostel’ for those facing homelessness. They are also places where people can find support with employment, debt problems, training, spirituality, loneliness, addiction or mental health. They are places where friendships are formed and lives are transformed.

In a recent message to Salvationists in Canada and Bermuda, General Lyndon Buckingham reminded us that the Church was never meant to stand still.

“An army on the move. An army so convinced about the reality of who Jesus is that it cannot stand still.”

As followers of Christ, we are called to gather in worship, encourage one another in faith, and move outward into our communities with compassion, hope, and the love of Jesus. May our corps continue to be places where people encounter Christ and experience the transforming power of the gospel.

Seeking employment can be hard. Employment Plus is a Salvation Army run service offering tailored support to help people become job-ready

Many people looking for work can experience low morale or hurdles like a lack of up to-to date skills, health problems, or homelessness. But Croydon Citadel’s Employment Plus team recently held a free Community & Employability event, alongside other local organisations, to highlight the support that’s available.

Church leader Lieutenant Colonel Edgar Chagas said: “For some people, it was the first step for them to leave their homes and start the journey to employment.”

Thank you to all the organisations who made the event happen. Only A Pavement Away, Croydon Voluntary Action, Strive Training, Metropolitan Police Service, London Skills and Development Network and National Careers Service.

Every year in May we celebrate National Salvation Army Week? In 1954, the United States Congress and then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed the first National Salvation Army Week as a reminder to Americans to give freely of themselves. In his speech, Eisenhower said: “Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”

This week, we pray for The Salvation Army in the Hong Kong & Macau Territory. The leaders of this territory have shared the following points to guide us as we pray:

While the tragedy of last year’s high-rise fire continues to impact our community, we give thanks for the compassionate and highly visible response of our personnel whose practical, emotional, and spiritual care for the victims has opened up new ministry opportunities for the territory.

We also give thanks for the far-reaching impact of last year’s ‘Legacy of Hope’, celebrations which enabled us to thank God for the Army’s impact in the past, and to anticipate his power and promise for the future.

We are grateful for the launch and growing adoption of the ‘Hope Builders’ initiative, a programme which addresses youth su***de, and has already equipped close to 200 individuals to recognise and respond to the needs of “at-risk” young people.

We pray for the ongoing adoption and effective integration of the six territorial priorities across all areas of the territory’s daily operations.

Pray that this year’s theme, Living Hope, will build on last year’s focus, and will bring fresh momentum to the Army’s mission across the territory.

Pray for the further advancement of the ‘Hope Builders’ initiative; that this programme shall have a positive impact on the high number of youths experiencing mental distress and those contemplating su***de.

While we rejoice in the increasing openness of our youth and young adults to God’s calling for their lives, and for older ‘second career’ candidates considering ministry, we pray for the strengthening of our officer numbers.
