Below is the full text of the open letter that His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II sent to Rev. Dr. Tveit, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), in response to the Statement on Syria issued by Rev. Dr. Tveit on February 26, 2018:

OPEN LETTER

Dear Rev. Dr. Tveit,

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
We are deeply appalled by your statement on Syria, issued on February 26, 2018. You mention 550 victims killed in Eastern Ghouta including more than 130 children. However, you neglect to mention hundreds of civilians including many children killed by the mortars and missiles coming from Eastern Ghouta, especially when most of these mortars have long targeted areas populated by Christians from churches which are members of WCC.
Targeting of civilians on all sides should be indeed condemned.
Your statement clearly shows a biased position concerning what is happening in Syria in general, and in Damascus in particular. As a Council of Churches representing its members including those of us who live in Syria, your statement should have been apolitical, more pastoral and reflecting the position of the great majority of Christians in Syria. It is obvious that your information on what is happening in Syria lacks accuracy and objectivity. Such an unbalanced statement will be used as a political tool serving a political vision of Syria’s future which does not necessarily express the views of the majority of the Syrian people including Christians. We remind you that the local churches continue to witness for Christ and seek to serve all the Syrians in a Christian spirit despite the daily danger. We feel that the way WCC is dealing with the churches in Syria is that of exclusion and indifference towards the voice of the churches. Therefore, we hope that the World Council of Churches once again becomes the voice of the suffering churches in Syria and to convey to the entire world the reality of what they are going through.
We pray that the conflict in Syria ends soon and that peace and security prevail so that all Syrians may live in harmony and contribute together to the rebuilding of their country and the future of their children.

SÃO GABRIEL, BISPO DE TUR ABDIN

A Igreja Sirian Ortodoxa de Antioquia recorda no dia 31 de agosto a memória do bispo *Mor Gabriel, chamado também de são Gabriel, bispo de Tur Abdin (atualmente na Turquia), considerado santo por sua vida e feitos milagrosos.

*Mor é correspondente a "Dom", tratamento direcionado aos bispos.

São Gabriel nasceu em Beth Qustan, por volta de 572 a 574 d.C., e aos quinze anos de idade entrou para o Mosteiro de São Jorge, contrariando o desejo de seus pais de que seu filho constituísse família. A insistência por parte dos seus pais de que Gabriel casasse era tanta que, após sete anos no Mosteiro de São Jorge, já tendo sido ordenado sacerdote, são Gabriel pediu para ser transferido para o Mosteiro de Kartmin, Deir Al Umur.

Por volta do ano 612 d.C. foi eleito superior do Mosteiro e em 618 d.C. foi sagrado bispo, sucedendo Mor Daniel Uzoyo como superior do Mosteiro e bispo de Tur Abdin.

Muitos milagres são atribuído a intercessão de São Gabriel, inclusive a ressurreição de três mortos. Ele também negociou os direitos da Igreja diante dos conquistadores muçulmanos que dominaram a região.

São Gabriel fez sua alta celestial no dia 23 de dezembro de 648 d.C., estando em seu funeral cerca de 2700 religiosos, entre sacerdotes, monges, diáconos, freiras e mais de mil fiéis de diversas regiões.

Ao final do século XV o Mosteiro recebeu o nome de seu famoso bispo, passando a se chamar Mosteiro de São Gabriel, nome que guarda até hoje. O Mosteiro de São Gabriel é o mosteiro cristão em funcionamento contínuo mais antigo no mundo e realiza todas as suas cerimônias exclusivamente em aramaico.

Ainda hoje sofre duras perseguições do governo turco, tendo suas terras sido tomadas recentemente pelo presidente da Turquia Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, levantando inúmeras críticas internacionais e, para infelicidade dos cristãos sirian ortodoxos da região, incitando ataques curdos contra o Mosteiro e a comunidade local.
