From September 4–8, 2026, the Frassati Society Philippines and Association of the Friends of Saint Carlo Acutis Philippines will unite in celebrating the First Anniversary of the Canonization of Sts. Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis at Sto. Domingo Parish, National Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary, La Naval de Manila, Quezon City.

The celebration carries the theme “MAKE YOUR LIFE A MASTERPIECE: Created for Greatness, Called to Holiness,” inviting everyone, especially young people, to rediscover the beauty and greatness of the Christian vocation.

In his homily at the Canonization of Sts. Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis, Pope Leo XIV encouraged everyone, particularly the young, “not to squander our lives, but to direct them upwards and make them masterpieces.” With these words, the Holy Father presents the Christian vocation through the language of art.

A masterpiece is the fullest expression of an artist’s skill, beauty, vision, and purpose. In the Christian life, God Himself is the Divine Artist. Yet God does not force His design upon us. Instead, He lovingly invites us to cooperate with His grace, freely allowing Him to shape, refine, and transform our lives into living reflections of Jesus Christ.

The lives of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati and St. Carlo Acutis beautifully reveal what this vocation can look like. Though they lived in different generations and circumstances, both allowed God to work through the ordinary realities of their lives. Through friendship, study, service, prayer, charity, the Eucharist, and love for the Church, they transformed the ordinary into something extraordinary: a life offered completely to God and to others.

Their witness reminds us that holiness is not reserved for a select few, nor is it something distant or impossible. Holiness is the universal vocation of every Christian. Each of us has been created with a unique purpose, endowed with gifts, called to greatness, and invited to become a masterpiece in the hands of God.

This anniversary celebration therefore seeks not merely to remember two young saints, but to encounter their witness, rediscover our own vocation, and respond courageously to God's invitation to holiness.

Like Pier Giorgio and Carlo, we are called to look verso l'alto—to the heights—and to make of our lives something beautiful for the glory of God.

04 July | Patron of Frassati Society Philippines

Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in Turin on April 6, 1901, into a prominent Italian family. Despite his privileged upbringing, he devoted his life to prayer, charity, and service to the poor. From a young age, he cultivated a deep love for the Holy Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary, receiving daily Holy Communion and spending long hours in Eucharistic adoration.

As a university student studying mining engineering, Pier Giorgio sought to "serve Christ better among the miners." He was active in Catholic Action, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and Catholic social movements inspired by Pope Leo XIII's social teaching. He generously gave his time, money, and energy to the poor, often sacrificing his own comfort to care for the sick, orphans, and the needy.

An avid mountain climber, lover of art, music, and literature, he used friendships and outdoor adventures as opportunities for evangelization, always encouraging others to attend Mass, pray the Rosary, and deepen their faith. Inspired by Saint Catherine of Siena and Girolamo Savonarola, he joined the Lay Dominicans and took the religious name Girolamo.

Courageous in both faith and public life, Pier Giorgio openly opposed Fascism and defended the Church when necessary. In 1925, he contracted poliomyelitis, likely while caring for the sick, and died on July 4 at just 24 years old. Even in his final hours, his concern remained for the poor he served.

His funeral revealed the hidden extent of his charity, as thousands of poor people filled the streets to honor the young man who had quietly become their friend and benefactor. He was beatified in 1990 by Pope John Paul II, who called him the "Man of the Eight Beatitudes." On September 7, 2026, Pope Leo XIV canonized him a saint. Today, his incorrupt body rests in the cathedral of Turin, where countless pilgrims—especially young people—continue to seek his intercession and draw inspiration from his joyful witness to holiness.
