Topic: CLEAVE AS ONE III

Memory Verse: Mark 10:8 - And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 6:6-8

Message: I'll conclude my discussion on this topic by stating that God wants His children to enjoy their marriages, as we see in today's memory verse. However, for this to happen, they must cleave to their spouses. When you want to glue two objects, they must be in close proximity. When couples live in different states or countries for a long period of time, their children are usually affected negatively and may end up being raised by only one parent or other people. God instructed parents to train their children (Proverbs 22:6), but this cannot be effectively done virtually or by proxy. Parents' physical presence greatly impacts the quality of training and also strengthens the bond between them and their children. When both parents live in the same house with their children, it is easier for the couple to monitor and correct them as required.

Zeruiah's story is one of the most pathetic accounts about families in the Bible. Zeruiah was David's sister, and she had three sons - Joab, Abishai and Asahel. Throughout the Bible, I observed that there was no mention of their father (1 Chronicles 2:16), and I'm inclined to think that this was because he was not as involved in the family as a good father should be. Although the boys grew up to become mighty men, they exhibited weaknesses that became their undoing. Asahel was a swift runner, and at one time, he ran until he was killed (2 Samuel 2:12-32). Joab's hot temper made him go against his boss and uncle, David, until David placed a curse on him (2 Samuel 3:26-29). Abishai was rash in his attempt to kill God's anointed, Saul, and David had to caution him (1 Samuel 26:5- 12). Another person in the Bible whose children didn't turn out well was Eli. In my studies, I observed that there was no mention of his wife's role in raising their children, so I was not surprised that they became sons of Belial (1 Samuel 2:12).

Living in different locations might be unavoidable for married couples sometimes, but this should only be for short periods of time. Single parenting is highly challenging, and I pray that God will give all single parents the strength and wisdom to raise their children according to His will. When both parents are alive and well, it is important that they work together to raise their children in the way of the Lord.

Hymn: Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

Points: It is important for all parents to be actively involved in raising their children in the way of the Lord.

Topic: CLEAVE AS ONE I

Memory Verse: Genesis 2:24 - Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Bible Reading: Proverbs 5:15-21

Message: We live in a fast-paced world where many people are chasing wealth and riches at all costs. As a result, many marriages are suffering. In some cases, a husband works in a different state or country while the rest of his family lives in another state or country. Long- distance courtships have existed for a long time, but now, we have long-distance marriages. In truth, however, a long-distance marriage isn't healthy for any family. A couple can have a short-term arrangement for them to be apart for unavoidable reasons, but this should not be for long.

Many cases of infidelity in marriage result from the absence of one spouse. Sometimes, even married couples that live together practice long-distance marriages. This might be because one spouse leaves for work very early in the morning and gets back very late at night. Such couples are living separate lives, and one or both of the spouses are likely to form connections with the people they spend most of their time with in their spouse's absence. Such connections can turn into ungodly affairs.

As a married fellow, if you notice that you prefer talking to other people than talking to your spouse, there is fire on the mountain. When you prefer spending time outside your home rather than with your spouse, there is trouble. When you prefer discussing intimate issues with your 'friends' of the opposite s*x instead of your spouse, you should retrace your steps and work on fixing whatever issues that exist in your marriage. Don't deceive yourself by saying, "I'm not doing anything with that fellow; we are just friends." Most extra-marital relationships start from casual friendships, and after a while, the devil introduces temptations that can lead to sinful acts. I pray that you will overcome any temptation that can destroy your marriage, in Jesus' name.

If you're married, spend more time with your spouse make him or her your confidant. Go out to fun places and take frequent walks together. At least once a month, dress up and go on a date. Book a hotel room or a private lodge for a weekend at least once every year so you can spend quality time with your spouse, away from all distractions. After your relationship with God, your relationship with your spouse is the most important in your life because God has designed you both to become one, as today's memory verse points out. Be intentional about cleaving to your spouse, and God will bless your marriage, in Jesus' name.

Hymn: Yield Not To Temptation

Points: Married people should be intentional about spending quality time with their spouses.

Topic: THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY

Memory Verse: Mark 9:23 - Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
Bible Reading: Luke 8:43-48

Message: I don't believe in impossibilities. This is why, when I ask someone to do something, and that fellow says it is impossible, I move on immediately and get someone else to do it.

When we were building Redemption City, some people said it was impossible to build a house within seven days, but we did it. They also said the house would collapse soon, but it has been standing for over 40 years. Then, they said, "It's a bungalow. A storey building will take months to build." However, we built a storey building in 18 days. They moved on to say t it would soon collapse, but it is still standing over 30 years later. In those cases, what we simply did was find a way to double time. Workers were working on the construction site day and night. That way, what should have taken two days to accomplish only took one. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we were successful - that is what I call divine engineering. No matter how impossible something looks, if you have the Holy Spirit and are determined to get that thing done, there will always be a way.

Several years ago, I was in a faraway country to minister during a Holy Ghost Service. The venue that was used for the service was a rented property, so for me to have a place to stay and pray before the service, they had to bring a motorhome. As I stepped out of the motorhome to go for my ministration, and while the protocol officers were still trying to clear the way for me, a woman who had been barren for many years ran into the motorhome and sat on the seat I had just gotten up from. The protocol officers ran after her and took her out of the motorhome immediately, but the woman was not bothered because she believed she had gotten her miracle. She had faith that God would give her a miracle child if she could just sit in the motorhome, and she became pregnant that month!

The woman with the issue of blood in today's Bible reading was determined enough to disregard all the obstacles that could have prevented her from touching the hem of Jesus' garment. Sometimes, you will face obstacles in life; however, you must know that with God, nothing is impossible. Trust Him, and don't give up; He will make a way where there seems to be no way, and you will testify.

Topic: HANDLING OPPORTUNITIES

Memory Verse: Ecclesiastes 9:11 - I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 9:10-11

Message: The author I referred to in yesterday’s teaching also said, “Life is an opportunity; seize it.” I agree with this saying. Indeed, life is an opportunity, and you must grab it with both hands.

I learnt a poem way back in 1957 which says,

"There is a tide in the affairs of men Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life Is bound in shallows and in miseries."

The above poem means that when people take an opportunity and make good use of it, they will attain higher heights; however, if they let it go, it might never be regained. Believe me, God is fair to all. He will, at one time or the other, present you with the opportunities you need to fulfil your destiny. The rest of your life will then depend on how you use the opportunities He has given you. Today's memory verse says that time and chance happen to ALL. Everyone will have their time and chance, but some will not seize it.

When some people are struggling, especially the elderly, it is likely that they misused their time and chance when they were younger. Many people don't even recognise an opportunity when it comes. This is why you must always be spiritually alert. Imagine what would have become of me if I did not use the opportunity of being in The Redeemed Christian Church of God correctly, or if I had left the church at the slightest provocation. At that time, I wouldn't have known it, but I would have walked away from my destiny.

People who are easily offended often miss their opportunities because opportunities sometimes come in unattractive packages. For Samuel, his opportunity came in the house of Eli and his wayward sons. If Samuel had gotten offended as a child and told his mother that he wanted to return home, he might have missed the opportunity to become the great prophet whose word never fell to the ground (1 Samuel 3:19). For David, his opportunity came when he obeyed his father's instruction to take food to the battlefield for his brothers (1 Samuel 17:14-20). I pray that you will discern your opportunities and use them well, in Jesus' name.

Hymn: Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour

Points: Father, help me to see the opportunities You send my way, and please empower me to seize them, in Jesus' name.

Topic: TESTIMONIES ABOVE AND BEYOND

Memory Verse: Ephesians 3:20 - Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:57-58

Message: It is very good to share testimonies about God goodness to you as it will boost the faith of others an position you to receive more from Him. There are however, some testimonies that people will either fine hard to believe or conclude that God is partial. Several years ago, one of my spiritual sons visited me and began to share testimonies about God's blessings over him, family, and his ministry. At a point, he stopped and sad "Daddy, I'm the only one talking you haven't said anything about what God is doing for you." I said, "Son, If I tell you all that God is doing for me, you will say that God is partial." I pray, in the name of Jesus, that God wil give you testimonies that will make people say, "Are you the only one serving God?"

To receive above-and-beyond testimonies, you must be willing to serve God above and beyond the ordinary. You must also be willing to pray and fast often. In 2 Corinthians 11:27, Paul said, "...in fastings often..." In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, he advised, "Pray without ceasing," No wonder the Bible says that God performed special miracles through Paul (Acts 19:11-12). God used him for extraordinary miracles because he gave himself to serving God extraordinarily. When you sow your service to God sparingly, you will reap containable miracles (2 Corinthians 9:6). However, when you give yourself to God's will and work bountifully, you will receive testimonies that exceed what you can ask or imagine.

A lady kept trusting God for a husband until she passed childbearing age. During one of our services, I asked everybody to ask God for something. She told God, "1 have waited on you for a long time for a husband, but I haven't gotten one; however, it doesn't matter because I will serve you all the days of my life." A few days later, a young man proposed to her. She looked at him and said, "Are you sure? You better go and pray again." The man said, "I am sure; I have prayed." The lady said, "Don't you want children? I have passed childbearing age." The man said, "I lost my wife, and I already have children by her." After they got married, she got pregnant and delivered a set of twins! God saw her heart and gave her a testimony above and beyond what she could have asked for. May you receive miracles that are above and beyond your wildest imaginations, in Jesus' name.

Points: Serving God unreservedly is the key to having testimonies that are above and beyond.

Topic: ARE YOU A TRUE WITNESS?
Memory Verse: Acts 5:32* - And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
Bible Reading: Acts 1:6-8

Message: In Acts 1:8, Jesus said that you will receive power after the Holy Ghost comes upon you, and you will become a witness. A witness produces proof. When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you become someone who can produce proof that Jesus is the Saviour, the Healer, and the Deliverer because He will reveal these divine attributes through you.

Your lifestyle must reflect that Jesus is in you because He said that people will be known by their fruits (Matthew 7:16). Being a witness means showing what it means to be a genuine child of God. All parties involved in a court case are expected to invite witnesses who would make statements in their favour. The testimonies of the witnesses are expected to strengthen the argument of the parties that invited them. Your lifestyle as a witness of Christ should strengthen the faith of others, not weaken it. Your life should draw unbelievers to Jesus, not push them away from Him. Your primary task as the Lord's witness is to follow Him sincerely and use everything He gives you to lead others to Him. Don't be the reason people vow never to follow Jesus because, as a witness, your life has told lies about God's nature and personality. Whenever your words and conduct speak lies about Jesus, you become a false witness.

While false witnesses tell lies about what they have seen, another set of people, whom Paul called false brethren, claim to have seen things they have not. They act as witnesses when they haven't seen anything.

Paul spoke about the dangers he faced at the hands of false brethren (2 Corinthians 11:26). Some of them came into the Galatian church and wanted to enslave the true believers there (Galatians 2:4); they came with high-sounding opinions that were contrary to God's will. You must beware of false brethren because they carry a contrary spirit. They twist the message of Christ and turn the grace of God into a license for immorality (Jude 1:4). Such fellows say that once you have received Jesus, you can live anyhow because the grace of God covers you. They also feign godliness for their personal gain. Paul warned that we should withdraw from such people (1 Timothy 6:5).

Beloved, as Christ's witness, you must be careful that your life doesn't speak lies about Jesus, and you must also take care not to fall into the trap of those who profess to be witnesses of Christ but have never met Him.

Topic: DON'T HELP GOD

Memory Verse: Proverbs 3:5 - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine Own understanding.

Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 13:1-14

Message: In Luke 1:26-38, an angel visited Mary and told her she was going to be pregnant and that she would give birth to a special son who was going to be great. Mary said, That's wonderful, but are you forgetting that I am not married yet? I have never known a man; how will a virgin conceive?" The angel said, "The Holy Ghost will handle that because, with God, nothing shall be impossible." Imagine what could have happened if she tried to help the Lord by sleeping with a man, just like Sarah did when she encouraged Abraham to sleep with Hagar so He could have a child (Genesis 16:1-3).

Years ago, my wife and I were praying for a certain woman who was waiting for the fruit of the womb. After a while, she lost hope and consulted a witch doctor who made some charms for her, and she got pregnant. That was over twenty years ago; up until now, she has not delivered the baby. When you try to help God, you will play into the devil's hands.

King Saul was another person who tried to help God. Shortly after he became king, the Philistines gathered together to fight Israel. It was a difficult situation, and the people began to mount pressure on Saul to act. Instead of waiting for Samuel to present the burnt offering, Saul decided to help God, so he overstepped his bounds into the priestly office and offered the sacrifice. When Samuel asked him why he tried to help God, he came up with excuses that he thought were valid. Those who try to help God always have excuses and reasons to do so, but this doesn't stop them from bearing the consequences of their disobedience. Saul lost the throne because of his foolish act.

Beloved, do not try to help God; just do your part according to His word and leave the rest to Him. If you try to help Him, you will open yourself up to the devil's manipulations and make grave mistakes. I have noticed from my walk with God that whenever He asks that you wait for Him, it is because there is something glorious on the way. Don't get deceived by the flashy things the enemy tries to dangle in front of you to distract you or push you to 'help God'. By trying to help Him, you might end up destroying the very things that you want Him to help you build.

Topic: LIKE THE DAY OF PENTECOST III

Memory Verse: Ephesians 5:21 - Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
Bible Reading: Ephesians 5:21

Message: Over the past two days, I have been discussing the significance of the events that happened on the day of Pentecost. On that day, everyone in that upper room received a touch from God. Their hearts were tuned to God, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.

If we truly want a revival in our generation, we cannot watch weak believers remain in their weak states. We must sharpen each other (Proverbs 27:17) such that the 'weakest among us will be working miracles. If we're really united, we won't look away when we see a brother dozing when he should be praying; we will hold his hand to encourage him to pray. We will not see a sister dressing indecently and showing signs of backsliding without trying to encourage her faith. If someone's fire seems to be dying, pray for the fellow rather than use him or her as a bad example to others to make yourself look righteous.

Everyone in the upper room on that particular day received a touch from God because they submitted to Him and to one another - nobody felt superior. In the 70s, I knew a young man called Bro Sam. He wasn't a member of RCCG, but he was very popular because he was heavily anointed by God. He couldn't speak English, but he was so anointed and was well sought after. On one occasion, he was invited to preach at a college. When he got up to say that he didn't speak English and would need an interpreter, Queen's English began to flow from his lips. He didn't know what he was saying, but the message kept flowing. After about one hour, people began to rush forward, weeping and crying for salvation. As soon as he left the college, he couldn't speak English again. There were testimonies of at least three dead people that God resurrected through him. Whenever he prayed for the sick, he would describe how their sicknesses were moving out of their bodies until they were completely healed. However, pride entered his heart after a while, and whenever he was called to go for Bible study, he would say, "Who is preaching? How many dead people has he raised?" Sadly, he ended up in an asylum.

Beloved, if we want God's power to rest among us, we must shun pride and submit to one another in the fear of God (Ephesians 5:21). We must also look out for the feeble among us and lift them up.

Topic: LIKE THE DAY OF PENTECOST II

Memory Verse: Romans 12:5 - So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:18-27

Message: I started discussing yesterday about the impact of the day of Pentecost and how Christians must be focused and separated from the world for us to experience such a revival again. Another thing I must point out is that on the day of Pentecost, the disciples were in one accord. If we want to see the power of the Holy Spirit in action, there must be love and unity in the Body of Christ, irrespective of denominations.

Psalm 133:1-3 says that God commands a blessing when people are united. It didn't say that God gives a blessing; it says that He commands a blessing. In other words, He says, "Blessing, you must manifest." When there is genuine love and unity among the members of a church or fellowship, there is absolutely no doubt that every member of that fellowship will be blessed.

God's power will not manifest in a divided church or family. Unity attracts God's presence, just as sugar attracts ants. Likewise, if a church is full of strife, jealousy, and all sorts of carnal works, God's power will be far from that church. Paul had to rebuke the Corinthian church for having factions. While some said that they were for Paul, some claimed that they were for Apollos (1 Corinthians 3:4). Paul called them carnal for their disunity. The Body of Christ is one, and if we want to experience God's power and presence like on the day of Pentecost, we must lay aside our petty differences and focus on the One whose name we bear - Jesus Christ. We cannot attack one another and expect God to dwell among us.

But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. Galatians 5:15

In the Scripture above, we see that when we live in disunity, we will consume one another. Many believers have injured other members of the Body of Christ with their words and actions. We must stop this and live in love and unity so that God's presence and power can truly be manifested among us.

Loving one another and being united is a sure way of showing the world that we are truly Jesus' disciples (John 13:35). We should not let unbelievers reject the gospel because they do not see love among us as Christians.

The body of Christ must unite. Gossiping, backbiting, and unhealthy competition among denominations must stop if we want to experience a true revival by the Holy Spirit.

Hymn: I Want To Be Like Jesus

Points: Father, please help me to love others as myself and let there be unity among Christians.
