Missed Fajr Prayer Due to Oversleeping? Here's What To Do.
Answer:
All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon our master and liege-lord Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family, his Companions, and all who follow them with righteousness.
Islam enjoins upon the believers the observance of the five daily prayers at their prescribed times. Allah, Exalted is He, says: {Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times} [ Qur’an 4: 103].
Among these, particular emphasis is placed upon performing the dawn prayer (Ṣalāt al-Fajr) in its appointed time—before sunrise—since many worshippers neglect it due to the difficulty of rousing themselves from sleep. Precisely for this reason, its merit and reward with Allah, the Almighty, are greater. The Messenger of Allah , Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, said: “ Whoever prays Fajr is pleased by the protection of Allah.” [Narrated by Muslim]
He , Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, also said:“Give glad tidings to those who walk in darkness to the mosques, that they shall have perfect light on the Day of Resurrection.” [Narrated by Abū Dāwūd]
Accordingly, Muslims must earnestly strive to perform the dawn prayer at its appointed time and take the necessary means to achieve this, such as forming a sincere intention, going to bed early, setting an alarm, or arranging for someone to awaken them. If one is genuinely overcome by sleep despite making such efforts, then there is no sin upon him; however, he must offer the prayer immediately upon waking.
If, however, a Muslim is negligent, heedless, or lazy, and deliberately fails to take the means that would enable him to rise for Fajr, then he sinful. Nonetheless, he must still perform the prayer as soon as he awakens, for the Prophet , Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, its expiation is that he should pray it when he remembers.” [Narrated by Muslim]
May the Almighty grant us and you the grace to aid His servants, and may He accept our righteous endeavors. . We implore Allah for His protection, guidance in both our religious and worldly affairs, and to steadfastly lead us on the path of righteousness. May Allah bestow His blessings, peace, and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad, as well as upon his family, companions, and followers.
