Rumi is trying to say that true intellectual and spiritual strength comes from restraint, observation, and internal depth rather than loud expression. We often live in a world that equates noise with power—where the person who speaks the loudest or fastest in a room is assumed to be the most capable or intelligent.

Rumi challenges this modern noise. When a person practices silence or speaks with measured restraint, it means their mind isn’t leaking energy through constant reactiveness, small talk, or defending the ego. Silence is the incubator for profound thought. By keeping his words few, a person concentrates his mental and spiritual energy, allowing his ideas to mature, deepen, and carry real weight. Rumi is reminding us that shallow water rumbles loudly over rocks, but deep water flows in complete, powerful silence.
