Jesus did not eradicate suffering, but He did enable us to suffer as He did. He endowed our suffering with divine power and redemptive value. And for that reason, St. Paul could actually “rejoice” in his suffering, for Christ’s sake! This is the deep, scriptural source of St. Josemaría’s spirit of joyful mortification, which is so often misunderstood: “Let us bless pain,” he wrote. “Love pain. Sanctify pain. . . . Glorify pain!” He is not saying anything so inane as “pain is good,” but rather that, through pain, we can accomplish great good—and more, God can cultivate great holiness—in our lives. Through pain we can grow more like Jesus Christ in His suffering. So our work is hard, but you really can’t beat the benefits, because they’re dispensed by almighty God.
