A new Lutheran Chapel takes root in Grafenwöhr, Germany!
Rev. Nathaniel Jensen, LCMS missionary in Germany, has been making regular monthly trips from Kaiserslautern to Grafenwöhr since February, providing pastoral care to Lutherans in the area. With several members planning to move there this summer, these visits have helped lay the groundwork for a more permanent ministry presence. Grafenwöhr is located in northern Bavaria, Germany, and is home to one of the largest U.S. Army training areas in Europe. The U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria, which includes Grafenwöhr and nearby Vilseck, serves thousands of American soldiers, families, and civilian personnel. This international setting presents a strategic mission opportunity, strengthening pastoral care for military families while actively extending the Gospel to local German residents through Word and Sacrament ministry.
Saturday, June 20th, 2026 marked an important milestone, as Rev. Jensen formally handed over the developing “Lutheran Chapel” to LCMS Army Chaplain Rev. Rob Kraft. With this transition, the congregation will continue to receive consistent and more frequent pastoral support.
The church plant is already showing encouraging signs of growth. In addition to serving the many English-speakers in the area, there is also strong potential for outreach among the local German community. What began with a few regular visits is quickly becoming a stable and promising ministry in Grafenwöhr.
