Midweek Meditation: Blessed, Kept, and Guarded in Christ

The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.
(Numbers 6:24–26)

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:7)

These two passages speak with one steady voice: God is for His people, and He is with His people.

The blessing from Numbers is a beautiful blessing, God placing His name upon His people. It is a reminder that life with God begins not with what we achieve, but with what He gives. He blesses, He keeps, He shines His face in grace, and He gives peace.

In my own humble understanding, this is not uncertain or dependent on human strength. God’s blessing rests on His promise, not our performance. To be “kept” is to be held by His faithfulness even when our own life feels uneven or stretched.

“The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.”

This is grace spoken personally. God does not remain distant or hidden in indifference. His face turned toward His people means favor, mercy, and life given in Christ.

“The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.”

This peace is not fragile or temporary. It is not the result of everything lining up in our circumstances. It is the gift of God Himself, His presence bringing rest where anxiety would otherwise take hold.

Paul echoes this truth in Philippians: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This peace is active. It “guards” like a steady watch over the heart and mind. It does not depend on perfect clarity or control in our lives, but on Christ who holds us even when life feels uncertain.

Together, these passages remind us that we are not left to carry ourselves through the week. We are spoken over, kept, and guarded by God’s own word.

So in the middle of the week, whether steady or scattered, we return to this promise:

We are blessed.
We are kept.
We are shown grace.
And we are given peace in Christ Jesus.
Amen.

Summer Party with the ACK – Sat, 13th June, 6.30 pm
You’re warmly invited to join the ACK and ecumenical partners across Freiburg for their annual summer gathering! This is a relaxed and social evening – the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends and make new ones from different churches in the city.

The evening will start with a short service, followed by a barbecue in the garden at Ev. Matthäus-Kirche (Sundgauallee 31). There’ll be a salad buffet and drinks provided – just bring some food for the barbecue and a contribution to the buffet. If the weather’s kind, the evening will conclude around the fire pit with guitars and singing.

This is a great way to experience the ecumenical spirit that makes Freiburg’s church community so special.

Come Experience “Visible – Invisible” at the Freiburger Münster
Bavarian artist Elke Maier has just completed a thread installation of breathtaking simplicity and beauty in the Freiburg Münster. Now through 28th September, you can experience it yourself.

Thousands of metres of fine white cotton yarn now weave through the cathedral’s nave—descending from the gallery, stretching across toward high altar. What makes it captivating: the threads seem to disappear and reappear depending on how sunlight catches them. As the sun moves through the day, different parts glow and fade. Visit at noon and you’ll see something entirely different from an evening visit. The installation invites you back again and again, at different times of day, to discover new perspectives. Sometimes a slight shift in where you stand reveals something completely new.

A related photo exhibition of Elke Maier’s earlier sacred space installations is on display at c punkt MÜNSTERFORUM (Herrenstraße 33), Monday–Saturday, 10 am–4 pm until 20th June. This shows her impressive work in other cathedrals across German-speaking Europe—well worth a visit while it’s still up.

Pentecost, the Celebration of Equality

Dear Friends,

We just celebrated Pentecost, one of the most significant events in the life of the Church. Often called the birthday of the Church, Pentecost is much more than the beginning of a new movement. It reveals God’s vision for humanity and for the community that follows Christ. At its heart, Pentecost is a celebration of equality.

The account in Acts 2 presents a powerful picture of God’s embracing love.

First, the Holy Spirit filled the entire room. No corner was excluded. The Spirit did not descend upon one section while neglecting another. The whole house became the dwelling place of God. This reminds us that God’s presence is not reserved for a privileged few. Human societies often create divisions based on race, nationality, language, social status, or education. Even churches can sometimes mirror these patterns. Pentecost challenges every form of exclusion. The Spirit fills the whole house and embraces the whole community.

Second, the Holy Spirit fell on each one of them. No one was excluded. The gift of the Spirit was not given only to Peter or the recognised leaders. Every person present received the gift. This is a profound affirmation of the equal dignity of all believers. The Church was born as a community in which every person was valued and empowered by God. This remains an important challenge for the Church today. We must continually ask whether our communities encourage participation from all people and whether every voice is heard and respected. Pentecost reminds us that everyone has gifts to offer and a place within God’s mission.

Third, the gathering in Jerusalem was remarkably diverse. Luke tells us that people had come from many nations, cultures, and language groups. Diversity was not an obstacle to God’s work. It was the very setting in which God’s power was revealed. From the beginning, Christianity was never intended to belong to one culture or one people. The Spirit did not erase differences. Rather, the Spirit united people within their differences. This is a vital message for our own time. We live in increasingly multicultural societies where diversity can sometimes lead to misunderstanding and tension. Pentecost teaches us that unity does not require uniformity. The Church is strongest when it values the richness of different cultures, traditions, and experiences.

Finally, all of them spoke in tongues that each one understood. The miracle of Pentecost was not simply that people spoke. The miracle was that people understood one another. Genuine equality requires more than being present in the same room. It requires listening, respect, and communication. Many divisions in both Church and society arise because people fail to hear one another. Different generations, cultures, and perspectives often struggle to connect. The Spirit of Pentecost calls us to become communities of understanding. We are invited not only to speak but also to listen deeply to the experiences and concerns of others.

The Acts 2 experience offers a vision for the Church in every generation. The Spirit filled the whole room. The Spirit rested on each person. The Spirit gathered people from many cultures. The Spirit enabled understanding across differences.

These are not merely details of a past event. They are the marks of the Church’s true identity. In a world often divided by inequality, exclusion, and prejudice, Pentecost proclaims a different message. Every person matters. Every voice has value. Every culture bears dignity. Every believer has a place in God’s mission.

May the Holy Spirit renew our churches with this Pentecostal vision, so that our communities may reflect the inclusive love of God and become living signs of equality, unity, and hope in our world today.

With prayers and blessings,

Rev. Vinod Victor

Midweek Meditation: Entropy

The laws of entropy/thermodynamics states that ‘as one goes forward in time, the degree of disorder of any isolated or closed system will always increase, or at least stay the same.’ More popularly expressed: left to itself, any closed system will deteriorate to a lower level of organization.

This is true for thermodynamics and energy, but we see this in any kind of life. If you doubt this reality, just look at how a kids’ room looks after it is cleaned up and look at the same room two days later when mom or dad didn’t pay attention!

The laws of entropy are the biggest argument against spontaneous evolution of life. The reality we see around us is that things spiral down. They never spiral up.

If you have to manage in your vocational life, you know what I’m talking about. One moment everything is lined up, your team is all arranged, all noses are pointing the same direction, everybody knows what to do. You turn around and don’t pay attention for some weeks and you’ll find that you need to put in a fresh dose of energy to get back to the same organizational readiness of your team.

This also applies to our spiritual lives. Left to itself, it will deteriorate into a lower level of energy. Chaos increases, organization decreases. You can’t pump up your spiritual life on a Sunday or whatever day that you get some spiritual input and then trust it to remain at the same pumped-up level for the rest of the week. One Jesus-experience in the past is not enough to get you through life and into heaven in a glorious state.

As one pastor said it so fittingly: we leak. We leak energy. We leak spiritual air. We’re like an air mattress that has a tiny little hole in it. It feels like it is pumped up and sturdy to sleep on, but long before the night is over, you’re on empty and you feel the hard floor underneath.

The writer of Hebrews admonishes his readers: Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Make level paths for your feet, so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed (vs 12+13).

Your spiritual fullness needs topping up regularly. You need to inject new energy into your system on an ongoing basis. Our spiritual lives are not a closed system. It needs input, it needs topping up. Also, this Wednesday morning.

The ACF Midweek Meditations
are written by a diverse group of our church members with the intention to seek God’s fingerprints in our lives. They range from somber to humorous and are inspired by all facets of live and faith. Written by ordinary people from all walks of life, they reflect a wide range of Christian backgrounds and spiritualities.

Each week’s text portrays the individual viewpoint of its author. They might not always resonate with everyone, and are not meant to be understood as representing the Anglican Church Freiburg as a whole. Yet, as a church that is aiming to ‘Build a Community of Grace’ we seek to practice learning from and listening to one another.

We pray that these humble ponderings add a small spark of blessing to your week.

ACF Weekend Away 2026: A Meaningful Retreat in Nature
The ACF Weekend Away during the Ascension Weekend 2026 at Hohrodberg in the beautiful Alsace mountain region offered participants a refreshing and spiritually enriching time of fellowship, reflection, and renewal. Surrounded by the calm and beauty of nature, the gathering created space to reconnect with God, with one another, and with oneself.

The Ascension Day reflections centred on the hope and dignity that the Ascension of Christ brings to human life. Participants were reminded that the Ascension is not about absence, but about the continuing presence of Christ and the calling to live with hope and purpose.

Friday was intentionally kept as a quieter day, allowing time for personal reflection, walks in nature, and meaningful conversations in small groups. Sharing life stories and praying together deepened relationships and strengthened the sense of community among participants.

Bishop Antonio Ablon served as the main speaker for the weekend and led three inspiring sessions on what it means to be a shepherding community. Drawing from his experiences in the Philippines, he spoke with warmth, wisdom, and authenticity about leadership, compassion, and caring for one another in the life of the Church.

One of the memorable aspects of the weekend was the hospitality expressed through food. The kitchen team thoughtfully prepared a wide range of multicultural dishes that reflected the diversity of the community. The meals became occasions of joy, conversation, and appreciation.

The weekend also included a variety of small group activities and games that encouraged laughter, creativity, and friendship. Activities such as speed dating conversations, trivia and music quizzes, artwork, UNO, card games, and board games created an atmosphere of openness and participation across all age groups. The nature walk was another great attraction.

Music and singing added a special dimension to the gathering. With several musicians contributing their gifts, the singing sessions became moments of celebration, worship, and togetherness that many participants deeply appreciated.

The closing Eucharist included a group biblical reflection during which participants shared the main insights and blessings they were taking home from the weekend. Many spoke about renewed faith, meaningful friendships, inner healing, and a deeper sense of belonging within the community.

As the weekend came to an end, there was a shared feeling of gratitude and anticipation. Many were already looking forward to gathering again for the Ascension Weekend Away in 2027.
