Imam Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, sacrificed his life in Karbala in order to stand for truth, justice, and the preservation of Islamic values. Sunni scholars regard his martyrdom as one of the greatest tragedies in Islamic history.

The Prophet ﷺ loved Hasan and Husayn dearly and said: “Hasan and Husayn are the leaders of the youth of Paradise.” (Tirmidhi)

The lesson from the sacrifice of Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) is that a Muslim should remain steadfast in times of trial, reject oppression, and never abandon principles for worldly gain. Karbala reminds us to uphold patience (sabr), sincerity (ikhlas), and trust in Allah, even when facing immense hardship.

May Allah be pleased with Imam Husayn, raise him to the highest ranks of Paradise, and allow us to benefit from his courage, steadfastness, and devotion to the truth. Amin.

But dear brothers and sisters, who is a Mu’min (believer)?

A Mu’min is one who has believed. A Mu’min is one who has accepted.

Even before opening the Book of the Qur’an, he accepts what it contains. For the Mu’min has accepted Muhammad Mustafa al-Amin (the Trustworthy), to whom Gabriel brought the verses of the Qur’an, as a Prophet, and he believes in all the words that he conveyed to us. He believes in the decree of Allah, the Most Majestic.

He believes in everything that is in the Qur’an, down to every single harakah (vowel mark).

He believes in Allah’s destiny (Qadar).

He believes in Allah’s divine determination (Taqdir).

For a God-fearing Mu’min:

* believes in Allah, His angels, His books, His prophets, and the Hereafter (Al-Baqarah 4, 177),
* believes in the unseen (Al-Baqarah 3, Fatir 18, Ya-Sin 11),
* responds to the call of his Lord (Surah Sad 38),
* fears the Day of Reckoning (Ar-Ra’d 21, Al-Ma’arij 26–27, Al-Insan 7),
* is a sincere and righteous person (Hud 90, Az-Zumar 33–34),
* follows divine guidance (Al-Baqarah 5).

At present, there are irrational people whom we see appearing on television screens. They take the Book into their hands, read it, and then declare what, according to their own understanding, is right and wrong, thereby corrupting the faith of the people.

These individuals do not even understand what they are reading, yet they explain what they themselves consider to be right and wrong. Instead, they should say how it might be and read the verses correctly.

With the understanding of a bird, devoid of knowledge and wisdom, they are hostile to the truth, just as a bat is hostile to the sun. They spread the fitna that they chew in their mouths as interpretation and tafsir.

You say: “My provision (Rizq) comes through these activities. Through my work, I earn my wages. If I were lazy, I would be kicking away my provision with my own foot.”

But you do not show the same care and consideration when it comes to attaining your religious success and your eternal home in Paradise.

You say, “If it is Allah’s will, I will be among the people of Paradise or the people of Hell,” then you stop performing good deeds and become lazy.

A heart that has been brought to life through Dhikr, a heart in which the light of Allah has manifested,
distinguishes the truth from falsehood and acts in accordance with:

“… And if you do not know, then ask the people of Dhikr.”
(Surah An-Nahl, verse 43; Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 7)

Knowledge of Allah’s decree and destiny should not prevent a person from staying on the (correct) path.
It is obligatory that the servant adheres to Allah’s commands and prohibitions, performs acts of worship, and remains obedient.
The servant cannot know whether he will be among the people of guidance or among the people of misguidance.
For this reason, he should strive and exert effort.

The behavior and movement of the people—everything the people do and carry out—are within the divine decree and Wade-i Rabbaniyye, that is, Allah’s determination and destiny.
Allahu Zul Jalal says:
“Indeed, We have created everything with a decree.
Everything they do is recorded in the books.
Everything, small and great, is written down line by line.”
(Surah Qamar 54/49–53)

There is a spiritual barrier between the God-conscious and the rebellious.
The Ashab al-Yamin, who are mentioned in the Qur’an and upon whom Allah’s ni‘mah (blessings), ihsan (grace), lutf (kindness), and jamal (beauty) have been bestowed, are surrounded by various blessings, as mentioned in the verse:

“They will be among thornless lote trees and clustered banana trees, and extended shade, and flowing, abundant water.” (Surah Al-Waqi‘ah 56:28–31)

But the Ashab al-Shimal are, as mentioned in the verse, “in scorching fire, and boiling water, and a shade of black smoke—neither cool nor pleasant.” (Surah Al-Waqi‘ah 56:42–44), surrounded by calamity and suffering of various kinds.

Those who have reached Allah with their souls and attained bliss, and those who have become slaves to the nafs and Shaytan, do not know the state in which the others are.
