Knowledge of Allah’s decree and destiny should not prevent a person from staying on the (correct) path.
It is obligatory that the servant adheres to Allah’s commands and prohibitions, performs acts of worship, and remains obedient.
The servant cannot know whether he will be among the people of guidance or among the people of misguidance.
For this reason, he should strive and exert effort.

The behavior and movement of the people—everything the people do and carry out—are within the divine decree and Wade-i Rabbaniyye, that is, Allah’s determination and destiny.
Allahu Zul Jalal says:
“Indeed, We have created everything with a decree.
Everything they do is recorded in the books.
Everything, small and great, is written down line by line.”
(Surah Qamar 54/49–53)

There is a spiritual barrier between the God-conscious and the rebellious.
The Ashab al-Yamin, who are mentioned in the Qur’an and upon whom Allah’s ni‘mah (blessings), ihsan (grace), lutf (kindness), and jamal (beauty) have been bestowed, are surrounded by various blessings, as mentioned in the verse:

“They will be among thornless lote trees and clustered banana trees, and extended shade, and flowing, abundant water.” (Surah Al-Waqi‘ah 56:28–31)

But the Ashab al-Shimal are, as mentioned in the verse, “in scorching fire, and boiling water, and a shade of black smoke—neither cool nor pleasant.” (Surah Al-Waqi‘ah 56:42–44), surrounded by calamity and suffering of various kinds.

Those who have reached Allah with their souls and attained bliss, and those who have become slaves to the nafs and Shaytan, do not know the state in which the others are.

“These are enlightenments from your Lord, guidance and mercy for a people who believe.”

What does “Selam” mean? Where is the station of Selam?

My esteemed brothers and sisters,
one of the most beautiful names of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, is the name As-Salām.

Salām has the same root as Islām and is free from all kinds of نقص and imperfection.
He frees His servants from every kind of deficiency, flaw, hardship, and calamity, and brings them into safety.

Our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said after every Salāt:

“Allāhumma Anta as-Salām wa minka as-Salām.”
“O Allah, You are As-Salām, and from You comes peace.”

Salām means that Allah brings His servants into security, places them in a protected realm, and grants them peace.

These servants who turn away from worldly desires and passions, who remove their nafs,
are the friends and confidants of Allah.

These friends of Allah have turned away from all pleasures of the nafs. They have abandoned their nafs.
They have torn apart the coverings and veils of the earth.
They have cut through illusory attachments.
By reaching the source of goodness and perfection, they have turned their faces toward the Gate of Allah.

Imam Ali, may Allah illuminate his countenance, said in a supplication:

“O Allah! Grant me that I may detach myself from everything for Your sake,
and enlighten the eyes of our hearts by letting us behold Your beauty.

For the seeing eyes of the hearts are to tear through the veils of light,
reach the source of greatness,
and our souls are to arrive at Your most beautiful and exalted station.”

Newcomers who take steps on the path of the Tariqa speak in their praises and dhikr about the desires of their nafs and about Allah’s gifts.
Their dhikr, their ibadah, their praying, their turning to Allah, and their reflection are based on wishes directed to Allah.

“Man does not utter a single word without there being an angel with him, watching and recording what he says.”
(Surah Qaf, verse 18)

Through the striving and efforts of the salik, and through a divine gift, the dhikr penetrates the heart.
When it enters the heart, it purifies the natural virtues, awakens the heart, and removes from it “Masiwa” (everything other than Allah), casting it away.
