Cuando el Señor en Su gracia nos deja mirar nuestros corazones y deja una huella marcada de lo que merecemos, entonces Su soberanía puede llegar a ser nuestro atributo divino favorito, porque la soberanía de Dios da esperanza al pecador perdido. La soberanía de Dios da a los que merecen el in****no una expectativa fuera de ellos mismos.

CALVINISTAS EN EL CLOSET

Hubo una conversación entre Charles Simeon y John Wesley el 20 de diciembre del 1784 anotada en el Diario de Wesley.

Dice Simeon a Wesley: Señor, entiendo que a usted se le llama un Arminiano, y a mí a menudo me llaman un Calvinista; por lo tanto entiendo que debemos sacar nuestras espadas. Pero antes del comienzo de la batalla, con su permiso le haré algunas preguntas.
¿Se siente usted una criatura depravada, tan depravada que nunca hubieras contemplado voltear su rostro a Dios, si Dios no hubiera puesto esa disposición en su corazón de antemano?
Wesley contesta: Sí, definitivamente soy una criatura depravadísima y no puedo hacer nada por mi propia disposición.
Pregunta Simeon: ¿Se siente usted inquieto al recomendarse a sí mismo a Dios por su propio mérito, o busca usted la salvación sólo por la sangre y justicia de Jesucristo?
Responde Wesley: Sí, no hay otro camino a la salvación que no sea por Cristo.
Pregunta Simeon: Pero supongamos que usted fue salvado primero por Cristo ¿No necesitará salvarse luego por obras?
Responde Wesley: No, Cristo salva desde el principio hasta el fin.
Si admite usted que Dios volteo el rostro de usted a Él por medio de la gracia, ¿seguirá usted el camino estrecho de la salvación por sus propios esfuerzos?
Responde Wesley: No
Pregunta Simeon: ¿Será usted guiado a cada hora y a cada minuto como un bebé en los brazos de su madre?
Responde Wesley: Sí, así me guiara Dios
Pregunta Simeon: ¿Está toda su esperanza de llegar al Lugar Santísimo envuelto en la gracia y misericordia de Dios?
Responde Wesley: Sí, toda mi esperanza está en Él.
Concluye Simeon: Entonces guardaré mi espada, porque este es mi Calvinismo, ésta mi elección, mi justificación por fe, mi perseverancia final; en fin, es en sustancia todo lo que creo.

Grammar can erode and corrupt the gospel; that’s why I love Sinclair Ferguson's gospel grammar lesson: “The great gospel imperatives to holiness are ever rooted in indicatives of grace that are able to sustain the weight of those imperatives. The Apostles do not make the mistake that’s often made in Christian ministry. [For the Apostles] the indicatives are more powerful than the imperatives in gospel preaching. So often in our preaching our indicatives are not strong enough, great enough, holy enough, or gracious enough to sustain the power of the imperatives. And so our teaching on holiness becomes a whip or a rod to beat our people’s backs because we’ve looked at the New Testament and that’s all we ourselves have seen. We’ve seen our own failure and we’ve seen the imperatives to holiness and we’ve lost sight of the great indicatives of the gospel that sustain those imperatives. Woven into the warp and woof of the New Testament’s exposition of what it means for us to be holy is the great groundwork that the self-existent, thrice holy, triune God has — in Himself, by Himself and for Himself — committed Himself and all three Persons of His being to bringing about the holiness of His own people.
