IF ANGLICANISM EMBRACES THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, IS IT THE ONLY RIGHT PATH IN CHRISTIANITY?
Someone asked this question: "Since Anglicanism embraces the best of both worlds, can we say Anglicanism is the right and only path in Christianity?"
In other words, if Anglicanism successfully holds together Scripture and Sacrament, faith and order, Catholic continuity and Reformed conviction, does that make Anglicanism the only right expression of Christianity?
My answer as an Anglican theologian is no.
Am I wrong? After all, if we genuinely believe that Anglicanism preserves a rich balance of Christian truth, why not conclude that everyone else has got it wrong?
The answer lies in the difference between appreciating a tradition and idolising it.
Anglicanism points beyond itself to Jesus Christ. The moment Anglicanism becomes the destination rather than a signpost, it ceases to be truly Anglican.
The Church existed before Anglicanism. The Kingdom of God is far bigger than Anglicanism.
No Anglican should forget that.
The New Testament does not teach salvation by denominational membership. It teaches salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Nobody is saved because they are Anglican.
Nobody is lost because they are not.
That does not mean doctrine is unimportant. It simply means that Christ is greater than our denominational boundaries.
The Anglican tradition itself recognises this reality.
Article XIX describes the visible Church as a congregation of faithful people in which the pure Word of God is preached and the Sacraments are duly ministered according to Christ's ordinance. The Article does not identify the Church exclusively with Anglicanism.
That is significant.
Classical Anglicanism has never claimed to be the only true Church. Rather, it has understood itself as a true part of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
There is an important difference.
To say "we are the Church" is one thing. To say "we are the only Church" is quite another.
Historically, Anglicanism has resisted such triumphalism.
Richard Ho**er, one of Anglicanism's greatest theologians, recognised that God's grace was not confined to one ecclesiastical structure. He defended the Church of England vigorously, yet he did not deny the Christian reality of believers outside it.
That spirit remains important today.
Every Christian tradition possesses strengths. Every Christian tradition also has weaknesses.
Anglicanism is no exception.
Roman Catholics have preserved a remarkable sense of universality and historical continuity. Eastern Orthodox Christians offer profound spiritual depth and theological reflection.
Many Protestant traditions have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to biblical preaching, evangelism and discipleship.
Wise Anglicans can learn from all of them.
In fact, one of the strengths of Anglicanism is precisely its willingness to learn from the wider Christian tradition. It listens to the voices of the Fathers, the Reformers, theologians, missionaries, pastors and saints from many places and many centuries.
That posture requires humility.
The belief that Anglicanism is the only right path often arises from confusing fullness with exclusivity.
An Anglican may believe that Anglicanism offers a particularly balanced and comprehensive expression of Christian faith. Yet that is very different from claiming that God's truth, grace and presence exist nowhere else.
The Holy Spirit is not an Anglican.
The Holy Spirit belongs to Christ and works wherever Christ is faithfully proclaimed.
That truth should make us humble.
Sometimes Christians speak as though God has chosen a favourite denomination and delegated heaven's administration to it. The New Testament offers no support for such thinking.
The apostles preached Christ, not denominational superiority.
Even the Anglican idea of Via Media should not be misunderstood.
The Via Media is not a claim that Anglicanism has solved every theological problem. It is an attempt to hold together truths that Christians have sometimes unnecessarily separated.
It is a method of faithfulness, not a declaration of perfection.
Indeed, one of the greatest dangers facing Anglicans is pride in our own moderation.
We can become so proud of being balanced that we become unbalanced. We can become so convinced of our comprehensiveness that we stop listening to others.
That would be a betrayal of the very principles we claim to uphold.
The true test of Anglicanism is not whether it can prove itself superior to other traditions. The true test is whether it faithfully leads people to Jesus Christ.
If it does that, it has fulfilled its purpose.
If it becomes an exercise in denominational self-congratulation, it has lost its way.
The goal of Christianity is not to make the world Anglican. The goal of Christianity is to make disciples of Jesus Christ.
Anglicanism is a path.
It is not the destination.
Christ is.
