to 2025 when I visited the Kowloon Mosque in Hong Kong.

Established in 1896, this mosque was originally intended to serve the Indian Muslim troops of the British Army. This was fine until the 1970s when the Mass Transit Railway carried out some underground construction which damaged its structure. The railway company apologised with compensation and a new mosque was built, opened in 1984. Hey, that’s the year I was born!

The Kowloon Mosque is recognised as the largest mosque in Hong Kong, accommodating up to 3,500 people. Still, it is often overlooked due to its next door neighbour, Kowloon Park, which houses a whole different type of idol worship. Known as the Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars, here you will find statues of local comic characters from the 1960s to the 2010s.

Islam is practised by 4% of Hong Kong’s population. Close to 50% have no religion, with Christianity at second with 19%.

to 2019 when I visited Christ of Saint John of the Cross by Salvador Dali in Glasgow.

Found in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, this 1951 crucifixion painting is as unique as you’d expect from the world’s most famous surrealist, Salvador Dalí. Most notably, it’s an angle you hardly ever imagine, but even stranger is that Jesus is floating above a body of water where fishermen stand with their boat. It’s also much bigger than I expected, at 205 cm by 116 cm.

Dali explained that this piece came to him in a dream and he then proceeded to hang Hollywood stuntman Russell Saunders from an overhead platform so he could gauge the angle. It is considered part of his "Nuclear Mysticism" period where he infused Einsteinian physics and Catholic spiritualism. Other Dali pieces from this era include The Madonna of Port Lligat and The Sacrament of the Last Supper.

One year after its completion, the Glasgow Corporation bought the painting for £8,200. It’s now said to be worth 60 million.

If you like Jesus stuff then The Gospel of Christ will be the best book you’ve ever read. Summon your copy now!

“True myth may serve for thousands of years as an inexhaustible source of intellectual speculation, religious joy, ethical inquiry, and artistic renewal. The real mystery is not destroyed by reason. The fake one is.” — Ursula K. Le Guin

to 2024 when I visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem, Israel/Palestine.

If you've read your Bible, you'll recall when Solomon's Temple was destroyed during the Babylonian Siege of Jerusalem. Due to religious and political sensitivities, no excavations have proven the existence of this structure, but the Second Temple, aka Herod's Temple, was definitely here. It was also destroyed, this time by the 70 CE Roman siege, but pieces like this Wailing Wall still stand in defiance.

On any given day, you'll find rows of Jews kissing these sacred stones, but this is not in praise of the wall itself. Rather, it's for the area behind it. Known as the Holy of Holies, it is the most sacred site in the Jewish faith as it was where God himself dwelt. For this reason, many Jews refuse to set foot anywhere beyond this wall, which is why the local Muslim community were permitted some authority over Temple Mount despite Israeli occupation.

Jerusalem is one of the most palpably spiritual places in the world, but sadly, Israel has tainted their heritage, more so every passing year, as a growing number of international law experts agree that their actions against Palestine qualify as genocide.

Holythrowback to 2024 when I visited The Old Vedanta Temple in San Francisco, California, USA.

Established in 1900, this makes it not only the first Hindu temple in the United States, but the first in the entire Western Hemisphere. Six years into its founding, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake devastated the city, but this structure stood firm. The headquarters have since moved not far from here into the “New Temple”, but this “Old Temple” still houses monks and services.

Vedanta Societies are based upon the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna. Very few Indian mystics were as dedicated to transcendence as this man, as he’d frequently get so caught up in his spiritual pursuits that he’d forget his family existed and he even lost the ability to blink. He once spent a full six months in meditation. His final message to the world was that all religions are valid paths to God. He died in 1886.

Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda is considered one of the most progressive Hindu thinkers in history, and he helped bring Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. He founded the Vedanta Society in San Francisco. After he died, numerous Ramakrishna disciples took over the organisation, including Swami Trigunatitananda, who was killed when a student attacked him with a bomb in this building.
