WHY YOU NEED TO PRAY FOR YOUR PASTOR OR MAN OF GOD
~ A must read for all Christians.
"Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have [free] course, and be glorified, even as [it is] with you:" (2 Thessalonians 3:1).
As intimate as Paul the apostle was with Jesus Christ, he still asked for prayers. It was absolutely necessary if he was going to successfully carry out his ministry in Christ to the saints and to the Gentiles.
There's nothing worse than people gathering in great numbers before the Lord in church every week and returning the same (unchanged). There is no gathering in the world as strict or as massive as the weekly gathering of the church. They go to honour God and to be blessed, yet it is a man's voice they hear; God comes through a man to speak to and bless His people. Just think about that. Even governments don’t have the attention of their people on strict weekly basis like pastors do.
It is therefore unacceptable and a complete abuse of God's plan, for people to gather weekly in church, give in their time and resources, only to return disappointed or less than when they came.
Why then do we go to church?
The Bible says,
"They go from strength to strength, [every one of them] in Zion appeareth before God" (Psalms 84:7).
Did you see that? Church gathering "appearing before God in Zion"! Hence, the people should go from strength to strength, not get weaker and weaker. If it is truly before God that we gather, then there will be the evidence of the presence of God on His people.
If all Christian churches around the world had their ministers teaching God's Word and bringing the seasonal ministration of the Spirit weekly to God's people, I tell you truly, the effect of the gospel over families, communities, and nations will be tremendous. But this is often not the case!
For any community, audience is one of the most fundamental requirements and one of the greatest opportunities for change. Our question then is; what does your pastor or minister say to you weekly? What spiritual and socio-economic impact does it have on your life and that of your brethren every week? Does it improve your character to the point where your life inspires others towards godliness? These are critical questions to judge your time in church and who you sit under!
What about those who come ignorant, confused, sick, broke, afflicted, and depressed? Do they return from God's house (the gathering of saints) the same? What becomes of their health, relationships, pursuit of purpose, businesses, careers, etc? Are they able to say "Because I was in church, my life is taking a more successful and beautiful turn"?
Do they say they're growing in the knowledge of God, finding rest, and being fruitful in good works? These are questions genuine Christians who live beyond mere religious routines ask!
You see, everything rises and falls as a result of leadership. If the pastor or minister doesn't bring God's Word and minister in the Spirit, the people will not see any godly change. They may keep attending church faithfully as a mere religious obligation. Yet, they know within themselves that things are not moving or changing. And you know what? Even the world will have no respect for God's people unless they're standing out in the light, fruitful, and prosperous in God's grace. If the light of the saints is off, what then should the world run to?
You see, if church leadership misses it, the people will stay frustrated. The Bible says,
"When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn" (Proverbs 29:2).
You see why it is important to pray for your pastor or man of God? He's in authority! The more "righteous" he gets, the more you and many others in church will rejoice. The more aligned he is with God, the more blessed the people will be. A careless, out of season, and ungodly minister, will make people mourn. They'll stay in their sorrows, and church will just be a vain routine.
I can assure you; a pastor, minister, or man of God walking in the Spirit and seasonal with God, will bring an overwhelming blessing to God's people all the time, through his preachings, teachings, counsels, prayers, and ministration in the Spirit.
However, this doesn’t just happen!
How you pray for your Pastor or man of God matters. You are indirectly helping yourself from staying in sorrow or staying stagnant in life. You're indirectly participating in your progress.
Paul the apostle said this to the church,
"... I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the FULNESS OF THE BLESSING of the gospel of Christ" (Romans 15:29).
Listen, there's such a thing as "FULNESS OF THE BLESSING OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST". Believe that. Unless this is your experience when you sit in church listening to a man, you're missing out on the rich purpose of church. Good preaching and teaching is more than motivational talks hyping your emotions yet having no lasting spiritual value. Every Christian should leave church "blessed" indeed; empowered in spirit, soul, and body; encouraged and strategically positioned with a renewed mind after Christ to bear more fruits of righteousness to the glory of God. Their lives and pursuits should be ever growing by their intelligent and zealous commitment to the Kingdom of God!
Carrying yourself to go sit in a place for hours, only to walk right back into your troubles or sinfulness week after week, is foolish discipline. Foolishness is discipline in things that don't improve you. The fact that it is God's house doesn’t mean the walls will bless you. Someone stands up there to speak and minister in God's authority. The question is; who is this person? How well is he synchronized with God? How knowledgeable is He about the Gospel? What are the testimonies of your life every week after listening to him or after participating in his ministration? These are questions intelligent Christians ask.
Because a great part of your blessings in church is decided by the order in church and by the state and quality of the ministration of your pastor, you need to pray fervently for him. Taking this for granted is taking your own life, time, and resources for granted.
Most pastors set apart time within the week to prepare for church in order to bring to you what is seasonal with God's heart (See Jeremiah 3:15 & Matthew 24:45). Praying for them is doing a great spiritual work. That's going beyond yourself, because others will also get blessed.
Pray for other ministers of the Gospel within your city, nation, or continent, and pray more fervently for your local church or assembly. Millions of Christians across cities and nations gather in churches weekly. Think about what will become of their lives when the man who stands up to speak in the authority of Christ does so correctly in the Spirit. Think about the fire the people will leave church with. Think about what will become of their relationships, families, and city. Think about the influence their lives will have on others and how fruitful they'll become. Think and you'll see why praying for pastors and ministers of the gospel is no joke. A wrong and unprepared minister makes a wrong service.
Here's God's plan when church indeed becomes church:
"For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea" (Habbakuk 2:14).
We're not serving God acceptably until the knowledge of His glory is filling the whole earth. Pastors and Ministers of the Gospel are critical to the fulfillment of this purpose as leaders of the church. Live also for this same purpose and you’ll have a truly blessed life.
Today, go ahead and pray for your pastor, minister, or man of God. In gratitude, in wisdom, and in your love for God, discipline yourself to do this. As you do so, you’ll be the primary beneficiary of the answers. God will increase you in diverse ways to do more of such righteous works.
Let's pray, and let's do so always.
