Covetousness Forbidden

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (Hebrews 13:5)

Covetousness is a mortal sin that has taken over our society. Today, many people want to get rich by all means and at all costs. People live above their means. Envy has become a common thing as people struggle to acquire wealth illicitly. People want to own the best mansion in town, drive the best car, some even dream of private jets even though there are no defined means to get such things. Some are in a hurry to join the millionaires’ club through shortcuts at others’ expense. Innocent and hardworking men have had to lose their lives as a result of unjustified attacks by those who want to reap where they did not sow.

From our text, Paul the apostle warns believers not to join the ungodly rat-race for acquisition of wealth and other mundane things. He warns believers against discussing other people in bad light. He also adds that we must be content with what we have. There are those who discuss others with the attitude of running them down. Some, out of envy, get involved in evil conversation and backbiting. Paul’s admonition that believers flee evil conversation and covetousness is very apt. It is not by discussing others or their success that anyone’s situation will change. Engaging in sidetalk or evil conversation will not improve our lot. Instead, it will rob us of boldness before the throne of God’s grace. How we need to keep our tongues and hearts free from every act of covetousness so that our blessings will not elude us.

Prayer:
God help me to to know and accept that you remain the Source of true wealth in all ages.

WINNING THE HOME BATTLE

And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? (JUDGES 6:14)

One of the toughest battles to fight is the battle within. It is a lot easier to identify external foes, study their tactics and take them on in battle. But most times, we hardly recognise the internal foes that must be defeated. Our lack of courage may be due to our fear of the reaction of those who will be affected by our decisions or because of whatever temporary pleasure we may forfeit for fighting this battle.

Gideon faced this kind of tough task in the first leadership assignment God gave him. The biggest problem he faced was not the Midianites, but his people who were given wholly to the worship of Baal. His first task was to throw down the idol of his father's house, signalling his disgust for idolatry. That was sure to incur the wrath of his people, but he had to do this, otherwise, they would never have victory over their external foes. And thank God, he did!

Before we can take on external enemies, we have to first examine potential problems in our own souls. Check up if you have thrown down those idols of "Baal" around you. They may be long-held family traditions and practices that run contrary to the will and word of God. They may be bottled-up enmity and grudges against another; or a long-cherished carnal indulgence that hinders you from giving your best to the Lord. Understand that no amount of prayers and deliverances conducted for you can give you total and permanent victory until you willingly throw down those idols! Take the step now.

Exhortation ;
It is wisdom to make those changes that make people around you uncomfortable.

Prayer:
Oh Lord empower and help me to win my home battles in Jesus mighty name.

1 thessalonians ch 5

The Day of the Lord

1. There is no need to write you, friends, about the times and occasions when these things will happen.

2. For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night.

3. When people say, *Everything is quiet and safe,* then suddenly destruction will hit them! It will come as suddenly as the pains that come upon a woman in labor, and people will not escape.

4. But you, friends, are not in the darkness, and the Day should not take you by surprise like a thief.

5. All of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.

6. So then, we should not be sleeping like the others; we should be awake and sober.

7. It is at night when people sleep; it is at night when they get drunk.

8. But we belong to the day, and we should be sober. We must wear faith and love as a breastplate, and our hope of salvation as a helmet.

9. God did not choose us to suffer his anger, but to possess salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

10. who died for us in order that we might live together with him, whether we are alive or dead when he comes.

11. And so encourage one another and help one another, just as you are now doing.

Final Instructions
12. We beg you, our friends, to pay proper respect to those who work among you, who guide and instruct you in the Christian life.

13. Treat them with the greatest respect and love because of the work they do. Be at peace among yourselves.

14. We urge you, our friends, to warn the idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

15. See that no one pays back wrong for wrong, but at all times make it your aim to do good to one another and to all people.

16. Be joyful always,

17. pray at all times,

18. be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union with Christ Jesus.

19. Do not restrain the Holy Spirit;

20. do not despise inspired messages.

21. Put all things to the test: keep what is good

22. and avoid every kind of evil.

23. May the God who gives us peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being---spirit, soul, and body---free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24. He who calls you will do it, because he is faithful.

25. Pray also for us, friends.

26. Greet all the believers with the kiss of peace.

27. I urge you by the authority of the Lord to read this letter to all the believers.

28. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

The words we use to describe ourselves create our reality. Instead of focusing on what's missing, intentional language can help you focus on growth and gratitude. It's a powerful way to shift your perspective. Your words are the tools you use to build your future.
