St. William of Bourges came from the noble Counts of Nevers and was raised by his uncle, Peter the Hermit, the archdeacon of Soissons. Choosing a life of faith over worldly luxury, William dedicated himself to prayer and study, becoming a canon in Soissons and later in Paris.

Seeking greater solitude, he joined the Grandmont hermits, but due to internal disagreements, he switched to the Cistercian Order. William flourished at Pontigny Abbey and was appointed abbot of Fountaine-Jean and Chaalis.

Renowned for his humility and devotion, St. William radiated joy and peace, making his virtuous life inspiring despite his strict self-denial. After the death of Archbishop Henry de Sully of Bourges, William was chosen by divine guidance to take on the role, accepting it hesitantly in obedience to the Pope and his Cistercian leader.

As archbishop, William led a life of strict asceticism and was deeply committed to helping the poor and sinners. He defended the Church's authority against secular interference and worked to convert the Albigensian heretics. Falling ill, he delivered a final passionate sermon before passing away on January 10, 1209.

Miracles reported at his tomb led to his canonization by Pope Honorius III in 1218. In 1562, the Huguenots destroyed most of his relics, preserving only a few remains. St. William's legacy continues, especially in France, where he is celebrated as one of the nation's patron saints. His spiritual heritage was carried on by his great-niece, Countess Maud, and his virtuous nephew, Archbishop Philip Berruyer.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is recognized as the first American-born saint by the Catholic Church. Born into a wealthy New York family, she experienced a simple and often solitary childhood, finding peace in reading the Bible. At twenty, Elizabeth married William Seton, enjoying a brief period of happiness.

However, tragedy struck with the loss of several family members, and her husband faced bankruptcy and illness. After William's death in Italy, Elizabeth was moved by the kindness and support of her friends there, leading her to convert to Catholicism in 1805, inspired by the comforting presence of the Blessed Virgin.

Returning to Baltimore, she established a school that became the first free Catholic institution in America, overcoming resistance due to her faith. Alongside her companions, she founded a Sisterhood, creating two orphanages and another school.

Despite her own health struggles, Elizabeth—who took the name Mother Seton after her vows—remained committed to her mission, driven by the 23rd Psalm, the Eucharist, and devotion to the Virgin Mary. She passed away in 1821 at the age of 46, leaving a lasting legacy through her Sisterhood and contributions to education.

Elizabeth was beatified in 1963 and canonized in 1975, celebrated for her unwavering service and faith. Her life exemplifies dedication to helping others, guided by a prayer for grace and love in service through Christ.

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets;
in these last days, he has spoken to us through the Son.
