FEAST DAY OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI | October 4

Today, we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most beloved saints of the Church. Born in 1181 in Assisi, Italy, Francis renounced a life of wealth and comfort to embrace poverty and follow Christ wholeheartedly. His life was marked by deep passion, sacrifice, and radical love for God and all creation.

He lived a life of prayer and penance, spending long hours in solitude and service. Through his humility, God worked many miracles, he healed the sick, preached to animals, and inspired countless souls to conversion. In the later years of his life, St. Francis received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, making him the first recorded person to bear them, a powerful sign of his union with Jesus in suffering and love.

Centuries later, in the same land of Italy, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in Montichiari under the title Rosa Mystica, renewing her call for prayer, sacrifice, and penance for the sanctification of souls, especially priests and religious. Just as St. Francis responded with total surrender to Godโ€™s call, Our Lady invites us to do the same today.

May the life of St. Francis inspire us to live with humility, generosity, and zeal for the Gospel, and may we heed the maternal call of Rosa Mystica with renewed faith and devotion.

St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
Maria Rosa Mystica, pray for us.

The New Pope is Possibly in the Room of Tears

This is the famous room of tears located inside the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. It is where a newly elected Pope prepares to publicly announce his election. In this room, the new Pope removes his cardinalโ€™s robes, dons the papal white cassock, receives the Fishermanโ€™s Ring, and has a moment of reflection before addressing the public.

Why is it called the room of tears?
The room is nicknamed the Room of Tears because new popes have often been overcome with emotion at thought of the heavy burden that has been given them. Itโ€™s called this because the strong emotions of the newly elected Pope often lead to tears.

I think there is a more powerful reason for the existence of the room of tears. It is about the enormous responsibility that faces a new pope. During the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI something happened. When Benedict XVI realized the election was going his way, he reportedly expressed feelings of being overwhelmed and initially resisted, stating, โ€œDo not do this to me! You have younger and better people at your disposal.โ€

It is always an emotional drama to watch as the new pope remembers where God has taken him from and where he has brought him

The novelist, Morris West captures the weight of responsibility that faces every new pope. According to him: โ€œThe Chair of Peter was a high leap, halfway out of the world and into a vestibule of divinity. The man who wore the Fishermanโ€™s ring and the triple tiara carried also the sins of the world like a leaden cope on his shoulders. He stood on a lonely pinnacle, alone, with the spread carpet of the nations before him, and above, the naked face of the Almighty. Only a fool would envy him the power and the glory and the terror of such a principality.โ€

In these poignant words, West has caught something of the enormous responsibility that Papacy thrusts before a man.

๐ŸŽฏWHY POPES CHOOSE A NEW NAME?

Popes choose a new name as a symbol of their new mission and identity as the successor of St. Peter. Here are the key reasons behind this tradition:

โœ…1. Biblical precedent: Just as Jesus changed Simonโ€™s name to Peter to signify his new role (Matthew 16:18), Popes adopt a new name to reflect their transformation into the spiritual father of the universal Church.

โœ…2. Spiritual significance: The chosen name often expresses the Popeโ€™s vision, priorities, or tribute to a previous saint or Pope. For example, Pope Francis chose his name to honor St. Francis of Assisi and emphasize humility and care for the poor.

โœ…3. Break from the past life: The name change signifies leaving behind personal identity to fully assume the role of the Vicar of Christ. It marks a life of service, sacrifice, and leadership.

โœ…4. Tradition: Though not required by Church law, it has become a deeply rooted tradition since Pope John II (533 AD) changed his name from Mercurius, a pagan name, to honor a Christian saint.
