Understanding Buddhism – Part 2 of 10

Life Before Death – The Buddha's Main Concern

When many people first encounter Buddhism, they often assume it is mainly concerned with what happens after death.

✅ Will we be reborn?

✅ What determines our next life?

✅ What are the different realms of existence?

The Buddha did teach about rebirth, karma, and what happens after death. However, if we look closely at his teachings, we find that his primary concern was not life after death it was life before death.

The Buddha saw that people were suffering here and now.

☑️ People experience anger. 😡

☑️ People experience fear. 😧

☑️ People experience stress, worry, grief, and disappointment.

☑️ People become attached to things that change and suffer when those things are lost.

Rather than encouraging endless speculation about the future, the Buddha focused on understanding the suffering we experience in our daily lives and teaching practical ways to overcome it.

This is why so many of his teachings focus on training the mind.

✅ How do we deal with anger?

✅ How do we overcome fear?

✅ How do we develop peace?

✅ How do we cultivate wisdom and compassion?

✅ How do we free ourselves from the habits and cravings that keep us unhappy?

The Buddha taught that our thoughts, words, and actions shape our lives. Karma is not merely about a future life; it is also about the choices we make today and the consequences we experience in the present.

Mindfulness, meditation, ethical living, kindness, and wisdom are all tools that help us train the mind and reduce suffering.

Of course, the Buddha did speak about rebirth and future lives. These teachings remain important parts of Buddhism. Yet he repeatedly brought people's attention back to the present moment the place where suffering arises and where suffering can be understood and transformed.

In a way, the Buddha was asking a simple question:

✅ If we cannot find peace in this life, how can we expect peace in another?

The heart of Buddhism is not merely preparing for death. It is learning how to live wisely, compassionately, and peacefully right now.

Because the life we are living today is the one we have the opportunity to transform.

A follower recently shared the comment shown in this screenshot and asked for my thoughts on it.

First of all, the purpose of sharing this is not to criticize anyone. The intention is simply to encourage learning and discussion, since understanding the Dhamma is important to all of us.

The comment says:

"The Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. That's all you need."

I agree that the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path are the foundation of the Buddha's teachings. They are at the very heart of Buddhism.

However, understanding Buddhism often involves learning many other teachings that help us understand and practice those core principles more deeply.

For example:

✅ Karma and its results
✅ Dependent Origination
✅ The Five Precepts
✅ Loving-kindness (Mettā)
✅ Compassion (Karuṇā)
✅ Sympathetic Joy (Muditā)
✅ Equanimity (Upekkhā)
✅ Mindfulness and meditation
✅ The lives and examples of the Buddha's disciples

All of these teachings help us apply the Dhamma in our daily lives.

A simple way to understand it is this - Knowing the destination is important, but understanding the map can also be very helpful.

The Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path is the heart of Buddhism, but the wider teachings provide valuable guidance for walking the path.

What are your thoughts? Do you think it is enough to know only the core teachings, or is it beneficial to learn the broader teachings of the Buddha as well?

May all beings be happy, peaceful, and free from suffering. 🙏

🌿 Before You Sleep...

Ask yourself two simple questions:

✅ Did I spend today peacefully?

✅ Did I make someone else's day a little better?

A kind word, a smile, or a helping hand can mean more than we realize.

✅ Leave a comment with your answer.

🙏 Have a peaceful evening/ Good Night

Understanding Buddhism: Part 1 of 10

What Is Buddhism?

More than 2,500 years ago, an ordinary man named Siddhartha Gautama set out on a journey to answer a question that still concerns us today:

Why do people suffer, and is it possible to find lasting peace?

The word "Buddha" means "The Awakened One" or "The Enlightened One." After years of searching, he discovered that happiness and suffering are closely connected to the way we think, act, and respond to life.

Today, millions of people around the world follow the teachings of the Buddha.

But what exactly is Buddhism?

Some people see Buddhism as a religion.

Others see it as a philosophy or a way of life.

Unlike many traditions, Buddhism encourages people to investigate its teachings for themselves rather than accept them blindly.

At its heart, Buddhism is about understanding the mind, developing wisdom, cultivating compassion, and finding peace within ourselves.

You do not need to be born into a Buddhist family to learn from these teachings. People from many different cultures and religions have found value in Buddhist wisdom because it addresses universal human experiences such as happiness, stress, loss, relationships, and inner peace.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Buddhism is that it places great emphasis on how we live this present life. Rather than focusing only on what may happen after death, the Buddha encouraged people to understand suffering, cultivate wisdom, and find peace here and now.

Today, we may be witnessing a new golden era of Buddhism. More and more people around the world are becoming interested in the original teachings of the Buddha and how they can be applied in everyday life.

Many people respect Buddhist traditions such as offering flowers, lighting lamps, and paying homage at temples. These practices have their place. However, the Buddha also emphasized the importance of putting his teachings into practice through kindness, mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion.

Over the years, I have met many people from different countries and backgrounds who live peaceful and meaningful lives because they apply these simple teachings in their daily lives.

What is especially inspiring is that many of these people have no Buddhist background at all. They are simply searching for wisdom that can help them live with greater peace, understanding, and happiness.

Over the next 10 days, we will explore some of the most important teachings of Buddhism in simple and practical language.

Please feel free to ask questions in the comments, and I will do my best to answer them throughout this series.

Mindfulness - An Ancient Buddhist Practice for the Modern World

More than 2,500 years ago, the Buddha taught the importance of mindfulness the ability to be fully present and aware of what is happening right now.

Today, many people believe they are busy, but in reality, they are simply distracted.

Think about family meals.
Many of us can remember a time when the whole family sat together for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We talked, laughed, shared stories, and listened to each other. We noticed when someone was happy, worried, tired, or excited. We were present.

Today, even when families sit at the same table, many eyes are fixed on a television screen or a mobile phone. We may be physically together, but mentally we are somewhere else.

The Buddha taught that much of our suffering comes from living in the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness gently brings us back to the present moment.

When eating, just eat.

When listening, just listen.

When walking, just walk.

When spending time with your loved ones, be fully with them.

One day, we may discover that the moments we rushed through were actually the most precious moments of our lives.

🌿 Mindfulness is not about doing more things.

🌿 It is about being fully present for the things we are already doing.

(Today, mindfulness is being discussed not only in Buddhist communities but also in business, education, and healthcare. Forbes and many other organizations have highlighted mindfulness as a valuable skill for leadership, focus, and well-being.

What is one activity in your daily life that you could do more mindfully?

"Holding on to the past creates suffering. Letting go creates peace."

A short story.

While traveling in India, I met a man living on the street next to place. He is young but looks worrying for something deeply. Although he wore worn out clothes and appeared homeless, there was something in his eyes that suggested he had once lived a very different life.

I offer some foods and try talk to him. After several attempts, he finally agreed to talk with me.

He told me that he had once been a successful businessman. But after his marriage fell apart, he lost hope and walked away from everything he had built.

As we spoke, I realized that although his wife had left (cheated) long ago, he was still carrying her in his mind every day. The relationship was over, but he was still holding on to the pain.

I gently said to him:

"She is already gone. The only thing keeping you trapped is your attachment to what cannot be changed. Let her go not because you never loved her, but because you did."

After few days, he came to me and said that he decided to return home and rebuild his life.

A month later, he came back to visit me. He had returned to his business, regained his confidence, and was smiling again. He thanked not only me, but also the many strangers who had shown him kindness during his darkest days.

Sometimes peace does not come from getting back what we lost.

Sometimes peace comes from accepting what is gone and moving forward with an open heart.

🙏 What is one thing you have learned to let go of?

Love vs Attachment - Are They Same ??

Many people think that love and attachment are the same thing. Buddhism teaches otherwise.

Love says: ❤️ "May you be happy."

Attachment says: 💔 "You must make me happy."

Love allows people to grow, change, and follow their own path.

Attachment tries to hold on, control, and possess.

Think about a tree in your garden - If you love the tree, you water it, protect it, and care for it. You are happy to see it grow, even if its branches spread in unexpected directions. You appreciate its shade, flowers, and beauty.

But attachment is different - Attachment says, "This tree belongs to me. It must grow exactly the way I want. It must never change."

When the tree loses its leaves, grows differently than expected, or one day is no longer there, attachment suffers because reality does not match its expectations.

The same can happen in our relationships - When we love someone, we wish for their happiness and well-being.

When we become attached, we may expect them to behave a certain way, stay with us forever, or make us happy. When they cannot meet those expectations, suffering arises.

This does not mean we should stop loving.

The Buddha did not teach us to become cold or indifferent. He taught us to love deeply while understanding that everything in life is subject to .

Our loved ones are precious not because they will stay forever, but because they will not.

🌿 Love without possessing.
🌿 Care without controlling.
🌿 Appreciate without clinging.

This is one of the beautiful lessons Buddhism offers to the world.

What do you think is the difference between love and attachment?
