Christ is Risen hallelujah!
Last night we came out of the darkness into the light by blessing the Easter fire and lighting the candle carrying the light of Christ into the church singing Lumen Christi. The Easter candle represents the risen Christ, as a symbol of light (life) dispelling darkness (death).
Holy water is also blessed specially for baptisms. We renewed our baptismal vows in-between the Litany and catechumens are baptised during this night.
I would like to highlight the Gospel. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome brought spices to anoint Our Lord Jesus Christ but found the soldiers sleeping and an angel sat where Our Lord laid. The Angel told the women that that Jesus Christ has risen.
There is a detail many might not understand which is about this folded cloth set aside. The Greek word is soudarion (a sweat-cloth, face-cloth, or napkin). Other translations describe it as "rolled up" or "wrapped together". Popular devotional teaching states that in Jewish tradition, a Master would toss a cloth to show he was finished eating, but fold it to signal he was returning. The folded napkin (or face cloth) in Jesus' tomb, recorded in John 20:7, is widely interpreted as a sign of resurrection, symbolizing orderliness, completion of His work, and a promise of His return, rather than a hurried theft. Details of such is of great importance to understand the Gospel of Our Lord.
The folded napkin and assurance of the angel declaring Our Lord's Resurrection comforted the three women. It was the three women who knew of His resurrection before any disciple.
We can also see that Easter like Christmas is a celebration of light-Christ. At Christmas Our Lord came into the world as saviour and as an infant went through a time of Passion in the flight to Egypt and the sacrifice of the first born sons killed by Herod. Easter is His resurrection and the fulfillment of His promise to the world.
How many people today do not know what Easter is. Most see it as some state day off from work or it's about bunnies, new life and rarely someone says it's related to the church. Even within the church a lot has gone lost. Rites declared out of date and no longer relevant. The liturgies celebrated without meaning. Tradition oriented churches still keep old rites alive and Christ in Easter. Our Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled His promise thus it is important for as well to promise Him that we remain in Him and live Christ-like and believe in the gospel.
We renewed our baptismal vows denouncing evil and that in the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ we find life. Greet each other with the Christian Easter greeting Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!
Yours In Christ
