Emmanuel Episcopal Church Geneva Switzerland

Emmanuel Episcopal Church Geneva Switzerland We welcome you wherever you are in your walk in faith. We are an English-speaking Episcopal parish in Geneva, Switzerland. Join us Sundays at 10:30am.

Emmanuel Church was founded in 1873 by a group of Americans residing in Geneva. The cornerstone was laid by former President Grant in July 1877, and the first service was held in the Church building on Easter Day, 1878. The Church building, with a seating capacity of over 200, exists today in essentially the same form as when it was constructed. By 1923, the congregation recognized the need for ad

ditional space for Church school classes, office space, and social functions, and set about to construct the Parish Hall, contiguous to the original building, which more than doubled usable space. The building was formally opened in November 1930. Shortly thereafter the American Library was formed in a part of the Parish Hall, and has continued to expand its activities to the point where it is one of the largest English-language libraries in Geneva. The discovery by U.S. businesses of the new opportunities offered by Europe after the Second World War led to an influx of Americans to Geneva, a "natural" location for European headquarters or operations. In more recent history, the Church accomplished the capital improvement of a new organ, considered to be one of the finest in the region for a Church of Emmanuel's size. The demographic composition over the past 20 years has gradually become more diverse. Located in the heart of Geneva, only steps away from the city's beautiful lakefront, Emmanuel draws its members from the greater urban area as well as neighboring France. Emmanuel values its rich tapestry of cultures, and encourages the exchange of cultures among its members.

A 2016 Parish survey indicated that the largest part of our population still comes from the United States (45% vs. 54% in 2005) but increasingly we have become more multinational. Many did not identify one sole country of origin, but indicated that they felt clearly bi- or multi-national. Nine percent of our current congregation identify themselves as having come from Switzerland. A great many of our congregation (61%) consider English their native language (almost no change from 2005). The ability to speak multiple languages is astonishing in this small community: 57% described themselves as fluent in three or more languages. Only 7% considered themselves purely English speakers. Many other languages are spoken amongst our community, including Hebrew, Chilambia, Oriya, Chinese, German, Italian, Spanish, Amharic, Douala, Russian, Swahili, Malay, Afrikaans, Ga and Farsi. French is spoken by 87% of the community. Given that many people first moved to Geneva to take up senior employment, the level of education in our community is remarkable. Postgraduate degrees are held by 62% of the population, and a further 28% received some university level education.

We speak many languages and come from many different Judeo-Christian backgrounds and traditions. This diversity of background has increased: Episcopalians make up the largest single group with 24% (32% in 2005), Roman Catholics 20% (16% in 2005); others come from either another form of Anglicanism (17%) or various Protestant churches (28%).

A few weeks ago, a group of Emmanuel Young Adults travelled to Rome alongside young adults from other Episcopal Churches in Europe, such as Paris and Germany. It was a wonderfully diverse group — some people we were meeting for the first time, and others we had met before through previous gatherings.

Over the weekend, we explored some incredible places across Rome. Highlights included visiting the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Catacombs of St. Sebastian, while also taking time to experience the city itself. For some of us, we were returning to a place we had visited as children, for others, it was a familiar city, and for some, it was their very first time in Rome. Along the way, we enjoyed great food, plenty of gelato, and even better company.

We were hosted by St. Paul’s Within the Walls and visited the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center. One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was volunteering at the center, helping to clean the shared area used by both the church and refugees, cleaning vents, and doing some gardening. As Emmanuel also hosts a refugee centre in Geneva, we were especially grateful for the opportunity to serve and learn from a ministry that shares a similar heart for welcoming others.

The weekend concluded with African Day during the Pentecost service. With many of Emmanuel’s young adults having African roots, it was a joyful celebration filled with vibrant worship, music, dancing, and food.

We’re grateful for the friendships strengthened, the new connections made, and the chance to experience faith, fellowship, and service together in such a special city.

Faith is not about making up the rules as we go. Every game has a framework, and so does faith.

For Christians, that foundation is the Trinity: one God revealed as Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

It took centuries for the Church to articulate this mystery, yet it remains at the heart of what we believe. The Trinity reminds us that God is not distant or abstract, but actively creating, redeeming, and giving life to the world.

Within this foundation, we learn how to live, grow, and participate in the life of faith.

✨ Trinity Sunday ✨

This Sunday, we celebrate the mystery and majesty of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—one God in three persons.

In this Sunday's Collect, we pray for the grace to remain steadfast in the faith we confess, worshipping God in unity and truth, and trusting that one day we will behold God's eternal glory face to face.

"Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory."

Join us as we gather in worship, prayer, and thanksgiving on Trinity Sunday.

⛪ Services:
• 08:30 Holy Eucharist
• 10:30 Holy Eucharist

In this Sunday's Collect, we pray for the grace to remain steadfast in the faith we confess, to worship God in unity and truth, and to trust that one day we will behold God's eternal glory face to face.

We are delighted at Emmanuel that is the feature writer for June in the Forward Day by Day booklets that are available at the back of the church. Forward Day by Day () is a daily devotional published by Forward Movement, a ministry of the Episcopal Church. Each day features a short, meaningful meditation drawn from a Bible passage in the daily lectionary, written to help you pause, reflect, and connect with God's Word — no matter how busy your day gets.

🕊️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲?
• A daily scripture-based reflection
• A suggested focus for prayer
• An action or practice to carry into your day

It's been inspiring readers since 1935, and today it reaches over half a million people. Each month's meditations are written by a different author, so you get a wonderfully diverse range of voices and experiences throughout the year. We are thrilled that Megan’s writing features in this edition.
