The Vienna team participated in the 35th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice this week at the Vienna International Centre. 600 civil society participants from 130 different NGOs attended the Commission this week. The delegation attended many interesting side events, organized by the United Nations, various member states, and civil society organizations. This year saw a clear focus on events centered around Crimes Against the Environment and a potential additional protocol to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. Furthermore, the team attended the informal dialogue with the new Executive Director, Ms. Monica Juma from Kenya, as well as the dialogue with the Chair of the CCPCJ, H.E. Rüdiger Bohn. The last day saw another important event for civil society at the UNODC, the General Assembly of the Alliance of NGOs. An umbrella network coordinating civil society engagement on crime related matters in Vienna, in which Dominicans for Justice and Peace have been very active for years. The CCPCJ this year was a successful, eventful, and busy week for the delegation.

New report: The Impacts of Artisanal Mining on Human Rights in Haut-Katanga (DRC)

Community consultations in Likasi reveal a troubling picture: 66% of people interviewed confirm school-age children work in mines, 69% report violence against women, and 86% say nothing concrete is being done to address environmental degradation.

Our report documents these harms in detail — and sets out concrete recommendations to the Congolese government to protect children, women, and local communities.

Strengthening Education on Climate Change and Human Rights in the Amazon
Dominicans for Justice and Peace organized a workshop in collaboration with the Office of Justice and Peace OP in Venezuela and CIDALC in Cúcuta (Colombia), with the participation of our Venezuelan partners. The goal was to launch our initiative “Education on Climate Change and Human Rights for Youth in the Amazon.”

Our delegation, led by Fr. Aniedi Okure, OP, joined 15 participants from Dominican schools in Venezuela, REPAM Venezuela, AVEC, Fe y Alegría, the Justice and Peace team in Venezuela, CIDALC, and the University of Santo Tomás.

Discussions focused on the urgent effects of climate change on Amazonian communities, especially indigenous peoples, and on opportunities to integrate climate and human rights education into school curricula.

The workshop laid the groundwork for the development of a Manual on Climate Change and Human Rights in the Amazon, which will provide teachers and school administrators with practical tools for classroom learning and future community advocacy.

We would like to thank all participants for their active engagement and hard work throughout the workshop.

The 61st Session of the Human Rights Council has been impactful for Dominicans for Justice and Peace. We addressed the Council, together with Fastenaktion - Action de Carême - Azione Quaresimale, under Item 10 on the human rights situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In our statement, we drew attention to the alarming situation of women and young people working in artisanal mining in Haut‑Katanga, where mining remains a vital source of income but comes with severe human rights risks. As highlighted in our intervention, “In the absence of viable economic alternatives, women continue to work there under extremely precarious conditions that expose them to serious health risks” . We also expressed deep concern about the involvement of thousands of children and youth in hazardous mining activities, which jeopardizes their health, education, and future.

🌍For the DRC, we called on authorities to:

⚫Accelerate the formalization of artisanal mining zones to improve safety and oversight

⚫Provide sustainable economic alternatives for families, especially women • Guarantee free, quality education and vocational training for children and youth

⚫Reinforce prevention and accountability mechanisms for gender‑based violence on mining sites

🌍We co-signed the statement by Associazione Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII, Caritas Internationalis at the panel discussion on human rights and a culture of peace. It calls for:

⚫Establishing national Ministries of Peace to promote dialogue, mediation, restorative justice, and nonviolence;

⚫Reduce military spending and support conversion of war industries to civilian production;

⚫Develop unarmed civil defence (Civil Peace Corps, Universal Civil Service) and consider a Special Rapporteur on the right to peace to ensure accountability.

UNOP also co-signed the joint oral statement by CCIG

Across all statements, our calls converge on a shared priority: ensuring that human rights commitments translate into real protection for communities on the ground and that peace is to be upheld.

🌍The joint statement urged States to:

⚫Strengthen implementation of recommendations through effective National Mechanisms for Implementation, Reporting and Follow-ups

⚫Defend the UPR’s role as a constructive multilateral tool

⚫Renew efforts toward inclusive and sustainable development ahead of 2030

Co‑signers of the Item 6 statement: Associazione Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII, Caritas Internationalis, DKA Austria, Edmund Rice International, FIACAT, FMSI ngo, VIDES Internazionale, IIMA, OIEC, Pax Christi International, Pax Romana, Plan International, Fastenaktion - Action de Carême - Azione Quaresimale, UPR Info, World Evangelical Alliance

🚨 Yesterday, we delivered an oral statement at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council, highlighting serious human rights violations in the artisanal mining sector in Haut-Katanga, DRC.

Women and young people are disproportionately affected — exposed to dangerous working conditions, toxic substances, and widespread gender-based violence, in a context of weak regulation that allows these abuses to persist.

Concrete action is needed to protect rights and ensure accountability.

“Our moment is truly geocritical. It is an Earth emergency.”

In his Trócaire Lent Lecture, Dr Hugo Slim of the Las Casas Institute and Board Member of Dominicans for Justice and Peacewarns that the world is facing a dual crisis: escalating geopolitical tensions and accelerating ecological breakdown. Instead of uniting to protect our common home, global attention is increasingly consumed by conflict and preparations for war.

Dr Slim calls on the Church—and all people of goodwill—to embrace a double love: love for humanity and love for nature. He urges renewed diplomacy that brings the cry of the Earth into political decision‑making, and highlights the urgent need to protect nature as a neighbour, not a resource.

His message is clear: we cannot safeguard peace without safeguarding the planet.
