“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”—John 3:16

God, our Heavenly Father, loves us and wants us to be happy. The happiness He wishes for us is a lasting happiness that requires learning and growth on our part. Our lives are the time to learn, to grow and to prepare to return to Him. During this life of preparation, we make mistakes and wrong choices.

Jesus Christ has prepared the way for us to overcome these mistakes so we can return to our Heavenly Father. He is the way. He encourages, guides and helps us find joy in living as He taught us to live. Living the gospel of Christ brings us joy during this life and prepares us for everlasting life.

We have experienced the joy that comes from living the gospel of Christ and invite you to come to Him, to experience it too.

One of the essential parts of our Christmas celebration is gift giving. The act of gift giving is a reminder of essential gifts given to all by our Heavenly Parents--the Plan of Happiness and the gift of a Savior, Jesus Christ.

As a parent I feel great joy as I watch my children give thoughtful gifts to each other. I can't help but think of the joy our Heavenly Parents must feel at seeing us give gifts to our fellow humans--gifts of kindness, nonjudgment, forgiveness and compassion. These are gifts we can give to friends, family and strangers alike.

We can keep the gift giving season going all year by remembering the gifts we have been given and by choosing daily to give simple gifts of humanity to others.

Reflecting on Christmas and how we have celebrated the last few days, David Mongillo shares a thought with us:

"Christmas is a special time of year for people around the world. It's an opportunity for people to give and receive, to serve and be served. It's a time for us to connect with friends and family and to reflect on the past year. Most importantly, it's a time for us to recognize the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ and to focus on his life and example.

I have a testimony that Christ truly is the son of God and that he lived a perfect life. I'm so grateful for his example and for his sacrifice in the garden of Gethsemane and on the cross. I know through him, we can all overcome our sins and find peace during challenging times and hardships. I'm grateful for his gospel and I know that he lives."

The gospel of Jesus Christ teaches people to be kind, patient, loving and forgiving. By following His teachings the world becomes a better place, but more importantly we feel more kindness, patience, love and forgiveness when we invite Christ in our lives. When Jesus Christ was born, there was not enough space in the hotels so he needed to be born in a stables. May our hearts have space to receive Him during this Christmas.
