Kiwis in the Congo - the DRC

Kiwis in the Congo - the DRC Hi. Geoff and CarolAnne here. This FB page will follow our time in the DRC. This page will follow Geoff and CarolAnne's time in the DRC.

We leave Tasman May 10th and will be in Lubumbashi May 15th for approximately 8 weeks. Geoff has been working, alongside some Congolese bible teachers, on a Church Leadership course for the churches connected to Mission Garanganze.

The Training of the Trainers conference began yesterday. Around 75 church leaders/teachers have come to look and learn from the new CDLA course, Sharing the Gospel. Some of these people have spent days getting to this conference. The commitment is amazing!

The elders from the 3 churches in Mitwaba. As you can see they have their new bibles tucked under their arms. They are actually very happy although the photo would suggest otherwise ;) The reality is, it is HARD to get Congolese to smile in photos. I can have a group of laughing Congolese people and the minute I start taking a photo, the serious faces come out 😂 Anyway, we have managed to buy another 25 KiLuba bibles for the Mitwaba churches. We were so blessed spending time with these guys.

On behalf of Waimarino Baptist Church, we were able to donate 16 KiLuba and 12 Swahili Bibles to the elders of 3 churches in Mitwaba. KiLuba bibles are not common and also cost a villager living in rural DRC 3-5 months wages. It was just a joy and privilege to do this on behalf of Waimarino Baptist and these were some very happy men :D

At CHAC hospital aka The Love of Jesus Christ hospital.

So . . . this is how you make concrete in DRCongo. The hospital is definitely coming along with half the first stage with tiled floors, awaiting painting. The foundations for the second stage are being poured. The new generator is now in its shed and having the rest of the walls built around it plus the big steel door is ready to be hung. The foundations for the two shipping containers that are now at the Zambia/DRC border are ready. This hospital will be such a huge blessing to the surrounding villages as well as the city of Lubumbashi. Dr Serge will be operating out of that hospital and good, safe and effective fistula operations will be done there. Read about fistulas and how ostracising that condition is for women. This hospital will be the answer to many many prayers here in the Katanga province!

We visited the deaf school. The children there have so much confidence. We met a wee girl who had just arrived at the school. She is in the process of learning sign language. I found it sobering that she has been living in a world of silence for the past 6 years with very little ability to communicate or be understood! Can't wait to meet her next year - I suspect she will be totally different ;) We also visited the engineering school where they make the hand cycle wheelchairs. These wheelchairs are amazing for people who've had polio. DRCongo is one of the very few countries where polio is still active.

Geoff was teaching on Matt 5:13-16 "being salt and light" Here he was giving a visual presentation re "hiding your light under a bowl" or in this case, a bucket ;)
