25th Anniversary of the Liverpool Historical Society

The hero of Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea was so astonished t the luxury of the submarine Nautilus he said: “had it not been for the electric light which flooded us, I could have fancied I was in the dining-room of the Adelphi Hotel at Liverpool, or at the Grand Hotel in Paris.”

Bob Dylan stayed in the Adelphi Hotel during his 1965 and 1966 tours of the UK. He was filmed at the hotel in two films which were made about each of his visits. In both films he can be seen chatting with adoring fans who were waiting for a glimpse outside. He looks the epitome of 1960s cool.

The Liverpool History Society has held its meetings in the Adelphi for the last two years and will be celebrating its 25th anniversary there on June 16 by commemorating Dylan’s visit to the city sixty years ago. Historic visit. Historic anniversary. Historic venue.
