Every harvest season, October 16th marks World Food Day. Currently, global hunger is on the rise and as many as 720 million people around the world go to bed hungry. This World Food Day, please join us and our partners in prayer and action for a future where everyone has enough nourishing food to eat. Visit clwr.org/wfd for resources and to learn more.

A prayer from National Bishop Larry Kochendorfer:

God, our creator, we are mindful of your many gifts this harvest season, yet we know the daily reality for many in our own country and around the world who live with not enough or no food, in areas of disaster, touched by war, displacement and violence.

Move us to respond with generous hearts, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, sheltering the unhoused, and welcoming the stranger, even as we work to eliminate food insecurity, advocate for solutions to end poverty, and live in harmony with the earth, until your peace and justice reign, and until all are fed.

We pray in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

October 10th in World Mental Health Day. This is a global day of awareness, advocacy, and action to learn and educate about mental health issues, to listen to those who experience them, and to promote healthy conversations that lead to deeper understanding and reduce stigma.

As a church, we affirm that having a mental illness is not a sign of personal failure or spiritual weakness. It is not a cause for shame. Just like with physical illness, people with mental illness deserve professional care, treatment, compassion, community, and dignity.

We also hold space for the variety of societal factors that can exacerbate mental health issues; increasingly, data is showing more people experiencing anxiety because of the climate crisis, as well as due to growing economic insecurity, war, and geopolitical instability. This shows how our commitment to love our neighbours with mental health issues is interwoven with our commitment toward Creation care, poverty eradication, peace, and justice.

We pray for everyone with mental health challenges, those who provide psychological and spiritual care, including our rostered leaders, and for strong and resilient communities that can provide support and love for all undergoing challenges.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of Evangelical Lutheran Worship. A book was only one part of an unfolding family of resources that has formed and supported the ELCA’s worship for more than two decades.

Many of you have been following the case of Natalie Abudayyeh, the ELCJHL youth and Birzeit University student who was abducted and detained by Israeli forces in June. Natalie appeared in court today, but unfortunately the decision regarding her release was once again postponed to the 20th of October. We are incredibly frustrated and distressed that Natalie will spend another month in prison, and we pray without ceasing for her safety and freedom.

Please keep Natalie, her family, and the church in your prayers, and please continue to raise your voices to your church networks and elected officials to advocate for Natalie's immediate release. We will share more updates as we have them.
