Holy Community Covenant Church

Holy Community Covenant Church Holy Community Covenant Church is a new church, planted and rooted in Winnipeg's West End. The Centrality of the Word: We are a community rooted in Scripture.

Holy Community Covenant Church is a community that values:
Truth - authentically seeking out God's story and wisdom
Hospitality - making room for one another
Growth - taking new steps in life and faith together
Generosity - sharing our lives through charity and service

We are a part of a larger family of churches - the Evangelical Covenant Church. This family of churches affirms six simple "affir

mations" that are reflective of our unique history as a denomination. They are not merely a statement of faith, but express our approach to our life as a community.

1. We read these ancient words together, dialogue about them, and allow them to shape our understanding of God, ourselves, our neighbours, our world, and our faith.
2. The Necessity of New Life in Christ: We are a community oriented around Jesus – His story and life are the basis of our story and life.
3. A Commitment to the Whole Mission of the Church: We are a community devoted to service, formation, and loving God and neighbour. We seek to give generously of our time, talents, and treasures in participation with God's work in the world.
4. The Fellowship of Believers: We are a community whose members share life with one another. We are not perfect, but we are a growing family who seeks to live into the name "Holy Community."
5. A Conscious Dependence on the Holy Spirit: We are a community who lives in faith, trusting God to guide us. We hold our own perceptions and plans loosely, seeking to be adaptable and useful to God in our evolving context.
6. The Reality of Freedom in Christ: We are a community of hospitality, extending to others the freedom Christ has given us. We are not a uniform group, but rather a diverse one where we make room for any and all who would come.

James “the Just” - who we believe wrote the eponymous epistle - was known by his friends by the super catchy nickname, “Camel Knees.” James was known to spend so much time in prayer for the city in the temple courts, that his knees developed hard calluses, like a camel.

THAT James calls the church to pray for and with one another. Specifically he uses the examples of confession and healing; they are, for James, communal liturgies.

When we pray for one another we partner with God in re-creation, bringing order to chaos. Our prayers with and for one another are not the least we can do, they are among the most profound things we can do!

Over the next weeks we’re diving into some of the “one another” commandments of the New Testament. The implication of the Gospel is that, through Jesus, we are drawn together into one large, diverse, and beautiful family of God. In this new community, how we treat one another and the way we live with one another is of enormous significance.

As a Holy Community, let’s learn to:
Love one another, accept one another, encourage one another, bear one another’s burdens, teach one another, serve one another, pray for one another, forgive one another, live in harmony with one another…

This Sunday is Palm Sunday and that means the beginning of Holy Week. It’s kind of a big deal in the community of those who believe in and orient their lives around Jesus, and we have some traditions in church that give shape to our experience of these days.

Join us for our gatherings over next week!

April 2nd, 6:00pm - Maundy Thursday Potluck and Communion. Bring a dish to share for this evening gathering with our brothers and sisters from Faith Covenant Church (hosted at their place - 1229 Windermere Ave.). We remember Jesus’ final meal with his disciples, eat together, and hear the call to love one another.

April 3rd, 10:30am - Good Friday Service. This day remembers Jesus’ self-giving death on the cross. We mark the day with a service of scripture, prayer, and hymns that is simple, liturgical, and interactive all at the same time.

April 5th, 9:30am - Easter Sunday Breakfast and Worship. Jesus is risen from the dead and we will celebrate that together! Join us at 9:30am for a big ole continental breakfast and a first hearing of the Easter story, and then stick around for a joyful service of celebration (beginning at the usual time of 10:30am).

Just as Jesus came as a servant, he calls his friends and followers to practice a life of serving. Being a servant doesn’t diminish our value - in fact, this is precisely what greatness is in the Kingdom of God.
